5 myths about cutting the cord

Cutting the cord isn’t a new concept – last year, three million people cut the cord, and it’s estimated that another six million will join the movement in 2020. It’s an increasingly popular choice and yet there is still a lot of confusion about how exactly it works. Allow us to help debunk some of the myths that might be holding you back from breaking up with cable.

Myth: It doesn’t actually save you money

Fact: You can save up to $70/month vs. cable. That's over $800/year!

The average cable bill climbs into the triple digits each month and those prices are projected to just keep going up. You might save a bit of money by bundling your TV and internet, but once you add your on-demand streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime those savings are gone.

Sling’s live TV streaming services start at only $30/month, so your wallet is free to get your favorite on-demand services and still save almost a thousand dollars per year. Plus, cutting the cord frees you from equipment rental fees. Just pay the one-time cost for your streaming device and you’re ready to start streaming live TV.

Myth: It's way too complicated

Fact: Setup is so simple, anybody can do it

Signing up is easy, you could be saving and streaming in 5 minutes or less. There’s a reason that streaming services don’t charge a setup fee or require a tech to come to your house and install equipment for you.

If you watch Netflix, Sling is just as easy to set up. Because live TV streaming is delivered to you over the internet, all you need is a simple streaming device like a Roku or Amazon Fire TV Stick – and the setup for those is as simple as plugging in to the HMDI port on your TV. If you have a smart TV or are watching on a smartphone, setup is even easier. Download the streaming service app from your device’s app store, log in and you’re ready to go.

Signing up for streaming services is way easier than cable. There’s no need to visit a physical storefront or sign a bunch of contract agreements, because streaming services have no long-term contracts. Becoming a Sling subscriber is just as easy as placing an order online.

Myth: You won’t be able to watch local news or sports

Fact: You can get local channels for free with an antenna and tons of live sports with channels like ESPN

Over-the-air (OTA) antennas get you free access to the local channels like ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, Univision, and more in your area, so you can watch your local news and network shows just as you did with cable. It’s completely legal and easy to set up, too. You can check the availability of local channels in your area using our local channel finder tool and even see how to get a free HD antenna deal by signing up for Sling.

Cutting the cord won’t make you lose live sports, either. There are tons of channels like ESPN and beIN SPORTS that feature 24/7 sports coverage and are included in live TV streaming lineups. Plus, you have even more options like NBA League Pass, NHL TV and other league-sponsored streaming services that can connect you with your favorite teams.

Myth: It isn’t possible to channel surf

Fact: Sling’s guide view lets you flip through live channels just like cable

Do you like to come home, switch on the TV and just let it play while you unwind from your day? While on-demand streaming services force you to make a selection before you can start watching, live TV streaming works just like watching cable. Once you open your Sling app, you can just click into the guide view and scroll through channels until you find something you like.

Myth: You’ll have to wait to watch new episodes

Fact: Live TV online gets you episodes when they air

Back in the heyday of cable, the only way to watch episodes of your favorite shows was to tune in live when they aired or wait almost a full year until the season was over and released on DVD or VHS. Then on-demand streaming services came around, but they functioned on the same timeline. But when you stream TV online, you can watch new episodes live when they air and immediately afterward on-demand.

Sling gives you the option to watch TV live and on-demand with no delay, so you’re never behind on your favorite shows. You can also use Sling’s Cloud DVR to record episodes to watch on-demand whenever you want. Cutting the cord doesn’t have to mean cutting yourself off from live entertainment.
