Is Mr. Poopybutthole the Season 9 Villain?

SPOILERS for Rick and Morty follow…

As we dive into fan theories about Rick and Morty season 9, we have to start with the end of season 8. In the post-credits tag, we find everyone’s favorite character, Mr. Poopybutthole, commenting on the events of the season, something we’ve seen dating all the way back to season 2. However, the camera soon pulls out to reveal that MPB is actually being held by authorities after being dimed out as an imposter by his wife Amy. What’s more, the scientists who are researching him have discovered that his “atomic vibrations” do not match anything in their reality. These scientists then ask Amy what she would have them do with him, and she responds by angrily glaring at her “husband.”

The Fan Theory: Because the scientists say that his atoms don’t match their reality (as opposed to their “universe”), some fans are speculating that Mr. Poopybutthole originates from beyond the Central Finite Curve, a cordoned off part of the multiverse where Rick was not the smartest being. If he’s indeed from beyond the Curve, Mr. Poopybutthole could be the missing link to resurrecting his late wife Diane…but only if he doesn’t turn heel and betray Rick. Will Mr. Poopybutthole (or his wife Amy) break bad in season 9?

Will Morty Finally Leave Rick in Season 9?

As we learned in Evil Morty’s origin story, countless Ricks have pushed their Morty’s beyond their breaking point. Could our main Morty be next? There’s a strong piece of evidence pointing in this direction: Morty has grown increasingly competent in recent seasons. “Competent” might sound like a low bar to clear, but our Morty has genuinely evolved, no longer simply tagging along but instigating action.

The Fan Theory: After their unlikely alliance with Evil Morty led to the death of Rick Prime in season 7, Evil Morty warned Rick that he has the schematics for the Omega Device, which can destroy all variants of an individual across the multiverse. If Rick pushes our Morty too far, would he consider teaming up with his Evil doppelganger to exact revenge on all Ricks everywhere?

Beyond Revenge: Rick’s Post-Prime Crisis and the Looming Omega Device Threat

Morty isn’t the only character who has grown over the past few seasons. Having killed off Rick Prime, Rick went one step further in the season 8 finale: He sealed off the memory of Diane to force himself to finally move on. And because Rick Prime had already used the Omega Device to erase every variant of Diane from the multiverse, Rick cannot simply find a replacement version of her. This gives Rick a clean slate to operate from in season 9.

The Fan Theory: With his past behind him, expect the world (or worlds) or Rick and Morty to open up in season 9. Showrunner Scott Marder has suggested a more "constructive direction" for Rick in the upcoming season, while co-creator Dan Harmon has said season 9 will be “very new, very alien.” Even Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen chimed in, saying that, “From the first frame, you’re going to see great high‑concept insanity with some of the best character writing ever done.”

Despite these assurances, we have a feeling that the season could end with a very big bang: the season finale dispenses with the puns and is simply titled “Field of Dreams,” a callback to a film that drips with earnestness and nostalgia (not to mention the ghosts of beloved family members).

At the very least, we know that the season 9 finale won’t be the end of the series: Rick and Morty has already been renewed through season 12, and there’s also a planned spinoff focused on President Curtis.
