How to Watch ‘South Park’ Season 27, Episode 2 Live with Sling

Even the President is talking about the season 27 premiere of ‘South Park’. Here’s a look at the controversy and what to expect from episode 2 of the series’ most pointed season yet.

It’s not often that a cartoon provokes an official response from the President of the United States. However, the force of the satirical blow dealt by the season 27 premiere of South Park demanded one. “This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention,” White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers told Variety in a statement. “President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country’s history – and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump’s hot streak.”

Like many of the official statements issued by The White House, their response to Variety contained a number of factually questionable claims. Specifically, the notion that South Park “hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread” is simply not true. Not only did the series score its biggest linear premiere since 1999, the episode aired just days after South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone inked a new deal with Paramount Global, which Variety says is “reportedly valued at $300 million a year for the next five years.” That’s hardly the type of deal that a media company would offer to a show “hanging on by a thread.”

Mischaracterizations aside, “Sermon on the ‘Mount” truly felt like a seminal moment in satire, and it catalyzed widespread interest in the show. Here's a closer look at what the fuss is all about, and a look ahead at what to expect when the second episode of South Park season 27 airs on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 10pm ET on Comedy Central. Why Everyone is Talking About the South Park Season 27 Premiere

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for South Park Season 27, episode 1, along with language that might offend certain people and U.S. Presidents. Please don’t sue us.

As with the best episodes of South Park, “Sermon on the ‘Mount” is densely packed with jokes, is wildly offensive and crude, and slices up a number of satirical targets with devastating precision. Here’s Variety’s tidy summary of the plot:

“In the season premiere, series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone took direct aim at President Donald Trump and his attacks on Comedy Central parent company Paramount Global. Trump is portrayed in the episode in the same way the show used to portray Saddam Hussein, including putting him in a sexual relationship with Satan. It then concludes with a parody PSA featuring a naked Trump stumbling through the desert.”

Specifically, Trump is portrayed as comically litigious, intimidating his critics in the media, the town of South Park, even Jesus Christ himself, by suing them. He’s also drawn with a micropenis. In multiple scenes. Including computer animation. Where it talks.

As we said above, this is at once completely over-the-top and spot-on. Both ABC and CBS News have agreed to multimillion dollar settlements with the President in agreements that the ACLU has characterized as “historic assault on independent journalism and press freedom.” The “Big Beautiful Bill” that the Republican-controlled congress passed on Independence Day eliminated all federal funding to NPR and PBS stations. That led to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting announcing that it will soon shut down, which many experts believe will be devastating for rural communities with limited resources for local news.

Regardless of the very real problem of media bias, if you’re someone who values first amendment protections around free speech and freedom of the press, this news is alarming and deeply depressing. It’s so sad, in fact, that all you can do is watch South Park to laugh at it.

Based on a new trailer for the second episode of season 27 (titled “Got a Nut”), it does not appear that Parker and Stone will be backing off of the Trump satire. In the trailer above, Trump is seen rubbing Satan’s leg at a black-tie dinner honoring his “courage.” We also see Cartman questioning Bebe’s patriotism and attitudes on abortion, and school counselor Mr. Mackey gearing up for an ICE raid.

The episode’s logline provides a bit more context: “When Mr. Mackey loses his job, he desperately tries to find a new way to make a living.” The new episode premieres Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 10pm ET on Comedy Central. Presumably, it will be followed by an official statement from The White House on Thursday.
