Ahead of Season 27, Here Are the 10 Best ‘South Park’ Characters

With ‘South Park’ returning for Season 27 on Comedy Central, here are our 10 favorite characters, plus how to watch new episodes with Sling.

There really are friendly faces everywhere in South Park. Ever since the adult animation smash premiered way back in 1997, South Park has featured a large ensemble of supporting characters beyond the core four of Stan, Kyle, Eric, and Kenny. Between its 300+ episodes, a feature film, and recent specials, there are now hundreds of characters in the show’s universe. From celebrities and politicians to fictional characters and the diverse citizenry of the town itself, there are often dozens of speaking parts in a single episode, most of which are voiced by the show’s creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Best ‘South Park’ Characters

Cartman

This may be an obvious choice, but deep down – in those regions known only to Lemmiwinks – you know it’s true. It’s not just his catchphrases or his endearingly awful behavior to basically every single character on the show. It’s his voice. Scientific authori-TYES have proven that anything is 20 percent funnier when saying it in the Cartman voice.

Randy

Much like Homer’s evolution into the central character on The Simpsons, Randy has slowly usurped The Boys as arguably the most important South Park character over the past several seasons of the show. A big part of that stems from his Tegridy Farms storyline alongside Towlie (another top-tier character). But he’s had plenty of other hilarious moments too, from his side gig moonlighting as the pop star Lorde to his role in setting off the COVID-19 pandemic (good times!).

Mr. Garrison

Speaking of wild character arcs, Mr. Garrison has gone from incompetent and wildly inappropriate teacher to incompetent and wildly inappropriate President of the United States and back again. As a stand-in for a certain politician, Mr. Garrison’s buffonishness embodies the humor/ horror many of us feel when reading news headlines. But, like all of the characters on the show, Herbert Garrison contains multitudes, just like his ex-boyfriend Mr. Slave.

Jimmy

Another character whose voice alone sends us into fits, Jimmy was introduced as a rival for Timmy in the classic episode “Cripple Fight” and now stands one of the show’s most charming characters. Whether infuriating Kanye West with the funniest joke in the world or hipping Stan to the sinister conspiracy behind toilet paper, Jimmy’s plucky, “handi-capable” attitude makes him a welcome addition to any episode he’s in.

Jesus/ Moses/ Satan

South Park was greenlit as a series based on the short The Spirit of Christmas, which featured an alarmingly violent fight between Jesus and Santa Claus. Jesus’ role early in the series served as a now-quaint indication of the show’s scatological sensibility and “oh-no-they-didn’t” fearlessness. But Jesus isn’t the only religious figure to have a prominent (and hilarious) role on the show. Moses, who appears to be returning for the new season, made his first appearance in the Season 3 highlight “Jewbilee,” while Satan basically stole the show in South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. Just don’t ask us about [CENSORED].

PC Principal

One of the newer characters on the show, PC Principal made his first appearance in the Season 19 premiere “Stunning and Brave,” where he replaced Principal Victoria. Although the initial plan was to kill him off by the end of that episode, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone decided to keep him around. That decision has paid off handsomely, as his violently militant brand of tolerance has helped South Park’s cutting social satire stay relevant despite dramatic shifts in our culture.

Chef

For those who are too young to remember the show’s breakout early years, casting Issac Hayes and his booming baritone as the wise, horny Chef gave the show a legitimacy that was needed given its cheap-looking animation style and transgressive sensibility. Chef was easily one of the series’ best characters up until his death in the Season 10 premiere, which was written into the show after Hayes quit due to the Scientology parody “Trapped in the Closet.” It was a sad end to a great character, but we’ll always have fond memories of his delicious Chocolate Salty Balls.

Mickey Mouse

Across its 328 episodes, hundreds of celebrities have had their voices impersonated (poorly) on South Park. That makes it nearly impossible to single out just one favorite, but turning Mickey Mouse into a ruthless and cruel CEO who rules over the Disney empire like a sociopathic mob boss is certainly one of their most inspired parodies.

Terrance and Phillip

Look, sometimes you come to South Park for the brutal and sharp satirical takedowns of American hypocrisy and sanctimoniousness. And sometimes, you come for fart jokes. These Canadian comedians are always ready to let one rip.

Butters

Lastly, we have to shout out Butters, the good-natured, hopelessly naive classmate to Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Eric. He may occasionally slip into his evil alter-ego Professor Chaos, but mostly, Butters is suffering some sort of hilarious indignity, whether being labeled a sexual predator for pinching the wrong girl on St. Patrick’s Day or getting shoved into a bomb shelter in the iconic “Casa Bonita” episode.
