FIFA World Cup 2026™: Round of 32 Explained
Following the Group Stage, the knockout rounds at FIFA World Cup 2026™ begin with the Round of 32. Here’s an explainer, plus how to watch live on FOX and FS1 with Sling TV.
The FIFA World Cup 2026™ doesn’t kick off for another week, but it’s not too early for soccer fans to start thinking beyond the Group Stage. Because of the tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams, there’s an all-new round in this year’s tournament: The Round of 32. While the name is straightforward, the path to qualification is anything but. Here’s a complete explanation of the Round of 32, along with details on how to watch FIFA World Cup 2026™ on FOX and FS1 with Sling.
The Knockout Math: 48 Teams Down to 32

The tournament opens with Group play, which features 12 groups of four teams. After all teams have played three games against the other teams in their Group, the top two teams will automatically advance to the Round of 32. That leaves eight more slots to be filled, and those will go to the highest-performing third-place teams across all 12 groups.
Deciding the 3rd-Place Wildcards (The Tie-Breakers)
How exactly will FIFA decide “highest-performing”? There’s a specific hierarchy for tie-breakers that come into play:
- Superior Goal Difference in all group matches - So if, for example, Austria and Ghana both end up third in their group with a win, loss, and tie, but Austria has scored 10 goals and allowed 11 (-1 goal differential), while Ghana has scored 11 goals and allowed 10 (+1 goal differential), Ghana would be ahead of Austria on tie-breakers.
- Most Goals Scored in all group matches - If the goal differential is the same, FIFA will look to total goals scored as the next tie-breaker.
- Fair Play / Team Conduct Score (the team with the fewest card deductions) - If teams are still tied, ties will be broken based on how many yellow and red cards the teams received in the Group Stage.
- Latest FIFA Men's World Ranking - If ties still aren’t broken, the final determining factor will be the most recent FIFA Men's World Ranking.
Given the relatively low-scoring nature of soccer, it’s entirely possible that the last couple of spots could be determined by the Fair Play / Team Conduct Score. Taken together, these tie-breakers mean that stoppage-time goals and discipline will matter more than ever before. A single yellow card can be the difference between moving on to the knockouts or flying home.
The Matchup Matrix: Who Plays Whom?
Once all of the wild card teams have been determined, the Round of 32 matches will be revealed. For teams finishing second in their Group, this process is relatively straightforward: the runner-up of Group A plays the runner-up of Group B, and so on. But because 12 first place teams will face 8 third place teams, the FIFA Matrix (Annex C) comes into play. This matrix is a pre-mapped list of all 495 combinations that could come into play depending on which third place teams advance. This matrix will help prevent unbalanced brackets and ensure fair progression.
Sudden-Death Rules: Extra Time and Penalties
Beginning with the Round of 32, all FIFA World Cup 2026™ matches are single elimination “knockout” games: Lose and you’re eliminated. That means that, unlike the Group Stage, there will not be tie games. If the score is tied at the end of the 90 minutes of regular time, here’s how the matches progress:
- Extra Time: The teams play two 15-minute halves. This is played in full; there is no "golden goal" rule, even if one of the teams scores.
- Penalty Kicks: If the score remains deadlocked after 120 total minutes, the match moves to a standard five-round penalty shootout.
- Sudden Death: If still tied after five rounds of penalties, the shootout goes to single-round sudden death.
