How to Watch the USMNT at the Gold Cup And Players To Know

The USMNT looks to defend its Gold Cup title, while Mexico looks to challenge under interim manager Jaime Lozano.

The 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup is underway! This is the 17th edition of the tournament which crowns the continental soccer champion of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The United States, Mexico and Canada are the only nations to win the Gold Cup. El Tri has won the tournament eight times, while the USMNT has seven trophies and Canada has their solo victory back in 2000.

The Gold Cup is a tournament where the US typically try to give younger players experience, while also peppering in some veterans to carry them along. You will not see names like Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah or Tyler Adams on the roster. But veterans like goalkeeper Matt Turner, DeAndrew Yedlin and Jordan Morris will be featured.

As we mentioned, the Gold Cup is a not only a time for stars like Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun, and Giovani Reyna to get much-needed rest, but for US Soccer to see what they have in the pipeline. There are some holdovers from the Nations League team who beat Canada 2-0 back on June 18, but players like Aiden Morris, Cade Cowell and fullbacks John Tolkin, Bryan Reynolds and DeJuan Jones are all names to keep an eye on. In regards to Morris, he chose to represent the US over Canada, and is one of the bright young stars in the MLS. As for the fullbacks, they all have a chance to learn from a seasoned veteran in DeAndre Yedlin. Cade Cowell was the star of the U20 United States team that made a run at the U20 World Cup, and he finally got his senior call-up. But the name to keep an eye on is Alejandro Zendejas. The winger who plays his club soccer for Club America is likely to be the best offensive threat for the USMNT.
