Vegas, Baby! The NHL All-Star Game Hits The Sin City

Look for new competitions, including the Fountain Face-Off at the Bellagio, ahead of the 3v3 tournament on ESPN and ESPN3.

The NHL is at the halfway point of the season which means that, due to last year's pandemic-shortened season, it’s time for the first NHL All-Star Game since the 2019/20 season (it's also the first ASG since the league swapped television partnerships to ESPN). The fan-favorite skills competitions will feature the first-ever outdoor event: The Fountain Face-Off on the Fountains of the Bellagio, along with the return of the Breakaway Challenge. The six skills competitions will take place Friday night, followed by a single-elimination 3-on-3 tournament between each division in Saturday's All-Star Game.

Here's a breakdown of all the All-Star festivities you can watch this weekend with the Sling TV Orange package.

Saddle up, folks. The NHL is going full ‘Vegas’ theatrics with this new skills competition. Eight participants will take a boat—yes, A BOAT—to the middle of the Bellagio Fountains to see who can shoot pucks into the five targets in the least amount of time. Sign us up.

Las Vegas NHL 21 in ‘22

If you’re going to force Las Vegas Boulevard to close, you better be doing something badass - thankfully, the newest skills challenge won't disappoint. Shooting at oversized cards, five players will try to create a hand of "21" (without going bust) in the least amount of shots. Win the title, and you’ll be known as “Puck Shark.”

Fastest Skater

Nothing too crazy about this event. And it doesn’t need an extra boost. Eight skaters will do a full lap on a course around the rink. The fastest time means you’re the NHL’s fastest skater.

Save Streak

Goalies will also have their chance to shine at the NHL All-Star break. In the Save Streak challenge, each goalie will face players from an opposing division and try to tally up the longest save streak. The round ends once a netminder lets in a goal.

Hardest Shot

There’s nothing like a clapping slap shot in hockey. The Hardest Shot event will see players get two attempts to fire a puck 30-feet from the goal as hard as they can. The caveat? The shot must be on-goal to count.

Accuracy Shooting

Similar to the NHL 21 in '22 challenge, this event will test players accuracy, but on an actual hockey goal. On each side of the rink a player will receive a pass and try to hit four 15 inch in diameter targets from 25 feet away. Finish you targets before your opponent and move on to the next round.

Breakaway Challenge

For the first time since 2016, the Breakaway Challenge will make it’s return to All-Star Weekend. The goalies for the event will not be NHL All-Stars. In net, will be Manon Rhéaume, the first woman to play in an NHL game, and actor Wyatt Russell, from the movie Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Similar to the NBA's Dunk Contest, players will attempt to dazzle with their breakaway routine, which will be judged by a panel of judges.

3-on-3 All-Star Game Tournament

The All-Star Game will take place Saturday, Feb. 5 at 3pm ET on ABC (simulcast on ESPN3 for Sling Orange subscribers). The four divisions of the National Hockey League—the Metropolitan, Atlantic, Central and Pacific—will play in a 3-on-3 tournament, where each "game" is a 20-minute period comprised of two 10-minute halves. The winners of the first two periods will face off in the third to decide the champs.
