Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers Preview

Since winning the Super Bowl as a Wild Card in the 2020 season, the Buccaneers have reeled off four straight NFC South championships. But that playoff streak is very much at risk on Saturday, as the Bucs need a win plus help to push past the Carolina Panthers, one of the most surprising teams in what’s been an unpredictable season. While his numbers may not be electric, Bryce Young has had several clutch performances for Carolina, including his Week 16 win over the Buccaneers. But the Panthers have been the definition of up-and-down this year, alternating wins and losses over their past 10 games, including last week’s home beatdown at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks.

On the other hand, Bucs fans would gladly take up-and-down: since starting 6-2, they’ve lost seven of their last eight games, including the past four in a row. Baker Mayfield looked like a darkhorse MVP candidate at the beginning of the season, but he’s since regressed to the point that he and the often maligned Young both have the same number of interceptions at 10 a piece. It’s wild that one of these teams will be hosting a playoff game next week, but such is the case with divisional winners. Carolina can earn their first divisional title in 10 years with a win, while the Bucs need a victory plus a Falcons loss to the Saints to win the tie-breaker. Since that game isn’t until Sunday at 1pm, Tampa won’t know their fate for another day. So while this isn’t technically a win-and-in scenario for both teams, expect an early glimpse at playoff-level intensity in what should be a hard fought game to kick off Week 18.
