Watch the Bills and Rams at SoFi Stadium on ESPN Monday, October 12 at 8:15PM ET, with Sling Essentials, Orange, Essentials & Select, or Orange & Blue.

The Los Angeles Rams are 2-2, and they're still the betting favorite to win the Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills are 3-1, right behind them on the odds board, and coming off a loss to the New England Patriots as 6.5-point favorites. Put those two together under the lights at SoFi Stadium on Monday, October 12, and you get the closest thing to a February preview the October calendar has to offer.

Here's a full Bills vs. Rams preview — two offenses that love three-tight-end sets, two elite run-blocking lines, and one very important question about who actually finishes drives. Bills vs. Rams preview: what to expect on Monday Night Football

On paper, these teams are mirror images. The Rams lead the NFL with 85 snaps in 13 personnel (formations featuring 1 RB, 1 WR, and 3 TEs); the Bills are second with 66. Both run the ball well — Buffalo averages 5.1 yards per carry (3rd), Los Angeles 4.8 (tied 5th) — and both lines rank in the top six in Run Block Win Rate. Expect a lot of big bodies at the line and not a lot of five-wide.

The difference is what happens after the yards. Buffalo scores 31.8 points per game on 386.3 yards. Los Angeles gains more — 417.0 yards per game — and scores 21.3. That's a 10-point gap on fewer yards, and it's the whole game in one stat line. (Somewhere, a Rams red zone coach is reading that sentence with steam shooting out of their ears.)

Why the Buffalo Bills will win: Let the RBs Cook

The Bills have the cleanest mismatch on the field. Running back James Cook runs gap concepts 60% of the time and leads Buffalo with 421 rushing yards at 6.0 yards per carry. The Rams allow a 53.6% rushing success rate against man/gap runs, which ranks 21st in the NFL. Power and counter are exactly what this defense has struggled to stop, and the Bills' line — 77% Run Block Win Rate, 2nd in the league — is built to run them.

Win early on the ground and the play-action game opens up. Buffalo fakes the handoff on 31.7% of its dropbacks (6th), and its peak play-action EPA sits at +0.69. Then there's the finishing: the Bills convert 53.3% of their third downs, and the Rams allow touchdowns on about 53% of red zone trips (21st). Add Josh Allen — 1,039 passing yards, 118 rushing yards, and 13 total touchdowns — and every red zone trip carries a real threat of six.

Can the Bills fix their offense? The points-per-drive slide

Here's the catch. Buffalo still ranks 3rd in the NFL at 2.95 points per drive, but that number is sliding. The Bills averaged 3.67 points per drive in Weeks 1 and 2, then just 2.27 over the last two games, including the loss to New England. Something stalled, and a cross-country trip to face the league's 2nd-ranked defense is a tough place to restart it.

That Rams defense is especially stingy through the air, allowing just 145.5 passing yards per game (2nd). Buffalo's pass protection hasn't been a strength either — the line has allowed 9 sacks, and neither team ranks in the top five in Pass Block Win Rate. And the injury report isn't helping. Receiver D.J. Moore (shoulder) missed practice Wednesday and Thursday after aggravating the injury against the Patriots, and defensive tackle Ed Oliver (knee) and slot cornerback Dee Alford (ankle) sat out both days, too. Buffalo gets an extra day to heal with a Monday kickoff, but Moore needs to get back on the practice field this weekend to have a real shot at playing.

A battle of the last two MVPs

Rams QB and defending MVP Matthew Stafford is in a groove. He's thrown for 315+ yards in three straight games, and he has two receivers who can win any matchup: Davante Adams (390 receiving yards) and Puka Nacua, who had 125 yards in Week 4 and torched Buffalo for 162 in 2024. The Bills lead the league with 9 defensive holding penalties, and against this duo, every hold is a fresh set of downs.

The Rams' heavy package has been lethal, too. Out of 13 personnel, they're completing 69% of their passes at 10.0 yards per attempt, with 4 touchdowns, 1 sack, and 1 turnover. The tight end room is thinner than it was — Terrance Ferguson is on injured reserve — but Colby Parkinson (knee/shoulder) is expected back, and so is Aaron Donald (back) after sitting out Week 4. "You have to be aware of him at all times," Allen said of Donald this week. Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard has admitted his pass rush and coverage aren't in sync yet, and that's the kind of gap a veteran quarterback finds with quick timing — the best way to neutralize Greg Rousseau, who leads the NFL with 6.0 sacks, and Bradley Chubb. On the other side, Byron Young (3.5 sacks) and the Rams' edges have to keep Allen in the pocket.

Expect both teams to come out heavy and run-first. Buffalo should find success on the ground early, while the Rams' pass defense keeps Allen's deep shots in check. The second half comes down to Stafford's quick game against an out-of-sync Bills rush, and to which team turns red zone trips into touchdowns instead of field goals. The market likes the home team, but the matchup data doesn't point to a comfortable win.

Score projection: Rams 27, Bills 26.
