Oklahoma City vs. San Antonio Series Preview: Things to Watch
https://youtu.be/qcLD93lqYX0?si=4KMmQ_zTatYSw5Hv
As NBA clairvoyant Brian Windhorst teases in the video above, this series could be an all-time clash between two teams and superstars who are quickly becoming the face of the league. This is the first playoff matchup this century—and just the seventh in NBA history—between two teams with 62 or more wins, the last being the Bulls and Jazz in the 1998 NBA Finals. While the defending champion Thunder enter the series with a perfect 8-0 playoff record, the Spurs absolutely dominated their regular-season series, winning 4-1 by an average margin of 11.75 points.
It’s no mystery as to why these teams have been successful: the Thunder have two-time reigning MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, while the Spurs have the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, Victor Wembanyama. Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points on a career-best 55.3% shooting in the regular season and is the focal point of an Oklahoma City offense that has posted a blistering 127.8 offensive rating in the playoffs—the highest mark over a playoff run in NBA history. But Wemby was the difference-maker in the season series. During their five regular-season meetings, the Spurs were +50 in Wembanyama's 126 minutes on the court, and -24 in the 114 minutes he sat.
As great as SGA has been, two of his teammates might be more important to this series. Thunder big man Chet Holmgren will match up against Wemby, and regular season results were not promising, as he averaged just 10.5 points on 39% shooting against the Spurs. But the Thunder have rolled through the playoffs without one of their best players, Jalen Williams, who is expected to return in Game 1 from a hamstring strain. If J-Will can get going, he provides another scoring threat that could prove too much for the Spurs.
If their fast-blooming modern rivalry weren’t enough, these two teams also have the weight of the past, as the Thunder and Spurs have engaged in several epic playoff battles over the years. They met in the 2012 Western Conference Finals (Thunder won 4-2), the 2014 Western Conference Finals (Spurs won 4-2), and the 2016 Western Conference Semifinals (Thunder won 4-2).

Despite San Antonio’s regular season success, the sharps at DraftKings Sportsbook have made the Thunder heavy favorites in this series; OKC currently has -260 odds to advance, compared to +210 for the Spurs. Regardless of who wins, Vegas likes the West over the East in the NBA Finals, as the Thunder has -165 odds to go back-to-back, followed by San Antonio at +310.
