San Antonio vs. Portland Series Preview: Things to Watch

https://youtu.be/OOMvR4V4CnM?si=O9aWhoSb1d8lDrcD

The #2 San Antonio Spurs vs. #7 Portland Trail Blazers matchup in the West is a clash of two teams who have far exceeded expectations this season. Led by interim head coach Tiago Splitter, the Blazers overcame the gambling scandal that engulfed former head man Chauncey Billups, and shocked the Phoenix Suns in the Play-In tournament to claim the No. 7 seed. The Spurs, meanwhile, look well-ahead of schedule as superstar “Alien” Victor Wembanyama has made a strong case for league MVP while leading San Antonio to the No. 2 seed in the ultra-competitive West.

It’s safe to say that the entire basketball world – and large swaths of planet Earth – will be tuning in to see Wembanyama's postseason debut. His first Defensive Player of the Year award all but delivered, Wemby has his sights set on much loftier goals: joining San Antonio icons Tim Duncan and Kawhi Leonard by winning Finals MVP during his age-22 season. Still, Wembanyama has had a few health setbacks in his first two seasons, so it remains to be seen how his body will hold up given the grueling schedule and physicality of the Playoffs.

Portland has their own burgeoning international superstar in 25-year-old Deni Avdija, who exploded for a career-high 41 points in the upset win over Phoenix. On top of that, 7’ 2” center Donovan Clingan is one of the few players in the NBA that even approaches Wembanyama’s size. Portland has been defying the odds all season, so they should be loose and calm against a Spurs’ team that’s burdened with Wemby-sized expectations.

Nevertheless, this San Antonio squad is much more than one player. The Spurs have seven players averaging double-digit points (and Harrison Barnes is just short at 9.9) and their relentless defensive hustle often leads to quick scoring bursts. Like the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Spurs are a deep and balanced team that will quickly punish even the briefest lapses in focus and effort.

Series Odds and Prediction

Heading into their first-round series, DraftKings Sportsbook paints a picture of a massive mismatch between the San Antonio Spurs and the Portland Trail Blazers. At -2000 odds to win the series, the Spurs are hardly worth laying money on, while the Blazers would net you $1,000 on a $100 bet if they can pull off the series win. The series spread tells the same story, with the odds of the series going longer than 5 games at -6000.

Prediction: Spurs in four.
