San Antonio vs. Minnesota Series Preview: Things to Watch
https://youtu.be/bZZC2VWfYbc?si=Np4BTU3vOOokYOoF
This series should be subtitled The French Connection. Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert were teammates on France’s silver medal-winning team in 2024, and now they’ll square off in the paint in this second round matchup. Both players enter the series with supreme confidence; Gobert looked like a 4x Defensive Player of the Year in shutting down Nuggets’ superstar Nikola Jokic for much of their first round series, while Wemby – this year’s DPOTY – had a jaw-dropping 16 blocks against Portland.
The question for Minnesota is the health of their superstar, Anthony Edwards. In Game 4 against the Nuggets, Edwards suffered a scary-looking knee injury and missed the rest of the series. Incredibly, the Wolves now expect Edwards to be ready for Game 1, though it remains to be seen how effective he can be. Edwards is one of the most electrifying players in the league, so Minnesota will need his scoring, particularly after also losing Donte DiVincenzo to a torn achilles.
But even with Anthony Edwards, Minnesota faces a tall task getting past the Spurs. Beyond Wembanyama, the Spurs boast a deep and skilled roster, and they shot a playoff-leading 41.8% percent from three-point range in the first round. Perimeter defense is actually one of Minnesota’s strengths, as they stifled Denver from beyond the arc in the first round. Minnesota also has a significant advantage in playoff experience over San Antonio’s young roster. But if the Spurs play like they did against Portland, it will be a towering challenge to get past San Antonio and Wemby.

DraftKings Sportsbook sees the Spurs as having a massive advantage over the Timberwolves, giving them -425 odds to advance compared to Minnesota’s +330 odds. In fact, the Spurs currently boast the second-best odds to win the NBA Championship (+390), while the Timberwolves are the longshot at +7000.
Prediction: Spurs in six.
