Detroit vs. Cleveland Series Preview: Things to Watch
https://youtu.be/p4UDZ5w0bEE?si=YqMimxxzhrqE18YS
As Central Division rivals, the top-seeded Pistons and No. 4 Cleveland know each other well. However, there’s one man who really knows the ins-and-outs of both squads: Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who coached the Cavs from 2019-2024 before getting sacked and moving onto the Pistons. With a middling 170-159 record in four seasons (including a dismal 6-11 record in the playoffs), it’s not hard to see why Cleveland moved on from Bickerstaff, but you can be sure that he’ll make sure Detroit is fully prepared to get some revenge on his behalf.
In the wake of Bickerstaff’s departure, new head coach Kenny Atkinson has helped mold the Cavaliers into one the NBA’s best offenses. During the regular season, the Cavaliers ranked fourth in scoring (119.5 PPG) and sixth in offensive rating (119.2), largely on the strength of backcourt stars Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. However, it could be Cleveland’s big men Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley that decide the series. Over their last five head-to-head meetings, Mobley has averaged 19 points and 8.6 boards, while Allen tallied 22 points and 19 boards in their closeout game against Toronto.
But with respect to the Raptors, they don’t have the defensive prowess of the Pistons. Detroit secured the top seed in large part due to their defense, and they’re coming off one of the most smothering halves of basketball that’s ever been played, as they held Orlando to just a single field goal in the fourth quarter of their Game 6 comeback win over the Magic.
Although All-Pro candidate Cade Cunningham has been outstanding in the playoffs, averaging 32.4 points, 7.1 assists, and 6.5 rebounds, he needs more help from his teammates this round. After falling behind 3-1, Detroit barely squeaked by Orlando; they can’t let that happen against a much more talented Cavaliers squad.
Series Odds and Prediction

DraftKings Sportsbook currently has Detroit as a light -125 favorite over Cleveland (+105), the lowest odds of any second round series. However, both teams are in the middle of the pack to win the championship, with Detroit (+1800) only trailing the Knicks in the East, and the Cavs right behind them at +2200.
Prediction: Pistons in 7.
