New York vs. Cleveland Series Preview: Things to Watch

Will rest bring out the best, or will the rust make them go bust? These are the questions for the New York Knicks as they finally get back into action in the Eastern Conference Final against the Cleveland Cavaliers. History suggests they’ll be just fine: in five of the last six seasons, the team with the rest advantage in the Eastern Conference Finals has advanced. However, before their 10-day break, the Knicks were on a historic heater; through 10 playoff games, they hold a +194 point differential, the best mark in NBA history at that stage.
A wider view of history also suggests the Knicks should be successful. These franchises have met four times in the playoffs (1978, 1995, 1996, and 2023), and the Knicks have won all four series, taking 12 of the 14 total games. And if we zoom in on this season, there’s more cause for optimism, as New York took two of the three meetings in the regular season.
However, here comes the rub: The Cavaliers have won two gritty 7-game series and their one win against the Knicks came after the James Harden trade. For all of his well-documented playoff struggles, Harden looks like the player they wanted to see this postseason; he’s averaging 23.6 points per game while dishing out eight dimes.
Yet Cleveland’s success will largely be dependent on Donovan Mitchell. Finally playing in his first conference finals, Mitchell is averaging nearly 28 points per game in the playoffs, and he remains one of the NBA’s most explosive scorers. Mitchell is the type of player that can completely take over a game, and within the thin margins of playoff basketball, the Cavs may need him to.
Still, with the way the Knicks are playing, it’s hard to see the Cavaliers advancing. New York might be the best team in the playoffs, OG Anunoby is expected to return to the lineup, Karl Anthony Towns is second in rebounds and is playing his best basketball since arriving in New York, and Madison Square Garden is the most electric atmosphere in the NBA. The Knicks look like the class of the East and another dominant series win could be a huge confidence boost in what would be their biggest series since the calendar flipped to the 2000s.
Series Odds and Prediction

DraftKings Sportsbook has the Knicks as heavy favorites in the series, giving them -265 odds, compared to +215 for the Cavs. Those are better odds than the Thunder have against the Spurs. Longer term, the Knicks are +550 to win the NBA Championship, while the Cavaliers are +2000 longshots.
Prediction: Knicks in six.
