New York vs. Philadelphia Series Preview: Things to Watch
https://youtu.be/_HtTrumzrK4?si=-urAbbcJtkEsiFim
It always felt like the Knicks would have to go through an Atlantic Division rival to reach the Eastern Conference Finals for a second-straight year. It’s just that most of us assumed that team would be the Boston Celtics. Nope. With Jayson Tatum out of the lineup, the Sixers stunned the Celtics in Game 7, pulling off the biggest upset of the first round.
It was a bright spot in what’s been 25 years of playoff frustration for Sixers fans. New York didn’t just eliminate Philly in the first round of the playoffs two years ago; they essentially took over their building, which has led Philadelphia star Joel Embiid to personally pay fans to hold on to their tickets for this series.
That speaks to the unique passion that New Yorkers have for the Knicks, but it also raises questions about overconfidence heading into this series. The Knicks were very up-and-down against the Hawks in the first round, allowing Atlanta to take a 2-1 series lead before dropping the hammer to close out Game 6, which they won by 51 points. That feels like a microcosm for their season; at times the Knicks look like one of the best teams in the NBA, except when they look exceedingly average.
With a clear path to their first NBA Finals appearance this century, the Knicks will need to stay focused especially with Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and rookie VJ Edgecombe all playing at a high level. If they can keep their eye on the ball, New York shouldn’t have too much of an issue advancing.
