Las Vegas Aces Spotlight

When they were struggling to stay above .500 in July and early August, it didn’t appear the Aces would make the playoffs, much less reach the Finals. The season bottomed-out after Las Vegas suffered a 53-point loss in August. It was very confusing to both new and old fans as to why the two-time back-to-back winners were struggling. A’ja Wilson had a heart-to-heart with the team after the loss, saying, "If you weren't embarrassed from yesterday, then don't come into this gym. You're not needed or wanted here." From there, the Aces turned things around and started looking like their old selves, going on a 16-game winning streak. That run not only lifted them to the No. 2 seed for the playoffs, but cemented A’ja Wilson as the 2025 MVP for averaging 26 points and 12 rebounds per game during this stretch.
The Aces first round matchup was against the Seattle Storm. This proved to be a very familiar first round for the Aces; they have now knocked out the Storm three times to move onto the Semi-finals. And while it was not an easy sweep for the Aces, it pushed them to find their playoff rhythm, with Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray also putting up impressive numbers in the series. The win set them up to go up against the Indiana Fever, the postseason's Cinderella story. With five players sidelined (including WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark), the Fever were led by MVP contender Kelsey Mitchell who averaged 16 points, 2.7 assists, and 1.4 rebounds during the series, pushing the Aces to the very end. In the win-or-go-home Game 5, Aliyah Boston and Fever breakout star Odyssey Sims also put up very impressive stats, sending the game into overtime. After Kelsey Mitchell left the game in the third quarter and Aliyah Boston fouled out in the fourth, Sims went on a personal seven-point run to keep Aces fans on the edge of their seats. In the extra period, it was Aces veteran guard Chelsea Gray who sank vital three-point shots. Her performance – along with Jackie Young, who had 32 points and zero turnovers – catapulted the Aces to a 107-98 OT victory on Tuesday.
Phoenix Mercury Spotlight

Unlike the Aces, the Mercury had a solid regular season without many twists and turns, earning them the No. 4 seed for the playoffs. Phoenix is led by veteran and MVP contender Alyssa Thomas, a 12-year vet putting up impressive playoff numbers after a regular season in which she averaged the second-most assists per game (9.2) in WNBA history. For their first round series, the Mercury took on last year's winners, the New York Liberty. With the team’s "underdog" attitude and desire to prove that they were the team to beat thanks to new additions (Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner, and Satou Sabally), many WNBA fans weren’t surprised by the series’ result. While the Liberty did win one, Alyssa Thomas had 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists and her fifth career playoff triple-double as the Mercury advanced to the Semi-finals in three games.
Up next was the Minnesota Lynx, who came up short against the Liberty in last year’s WNBA Finals. Led by MVP runner-up Napheesa Collier, the Lynx had a breakout year, earning the top seed in the Playoffs. Eyeing another chance to get back to the Finals, Minnesota used serious offensive weapons in Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman, who have tied games with their three-point shooting. In fact, they did just that to push the Mercury to the brink in Game 3. Satou Sabally led the Mercury with 23 points after the Lynx’s Collier suffered a season-ending injury. However, Collier’s absence, combined with the controversial suspension of Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, proved too much for Minnesota to overcome, with the Mercury advancing in four games.
WNBA Finals Preview
For many WNBA fans, this Final really couldn’t be a better matchup. You have the Mercury, who have eliminated the last two teams in the 2024 Finals, and haven’t been back to the championship round since 2021, when Brittney Griner was the leader of the team. Phoenix takes on the team of the decade so far in Las Vegas. If star players A’ja Wilson and Alyssa Thomas are not playing their best, both teams still have a variety of weapons to rely on. With the new change to a best-of-seven format, many fans think that it might come down to a winner-take-all Game 7, the two best words in Basketball. - Jessalyn Bradley
