Oklahoma vs Texas: Preview + How to Watch the Red River Rivalry
#12 Oklahoma and #3 Texas clash in Dallas for the highest-ranked Red River Rivalry since 2019. Here's what to expect and how to watch.
The 119th edition of one of college football's signature games, the Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas, is here. Last year, the Longhorns handed first year coach Brent Venables a 49-0 thrashing, securing their first win over the Sooners in four years. This year, the former Clemson defensive coordinator has his team off to a respectable 5-0 start, but Texas is by far the most talented team they’ve faced this season. Since taking down Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Steve Sarkisian’s team hasn’t missed a beat, easily handling Baylor 38-6 in a tricky road contest and then coming home and hanging 40-points on a ranked Kansas squad. Texas is currently a 6-point favorite, with the over/under total at 60. Aside from last year, this is a game that is known for points. Prior to the drubbing last year, the point total in the last five Red River Rivalry matchups has been 103, 98, 61, 66 and 93 (in other words, bet the over).

With that said, the Sooners defense is a completely different unit than last season. They haven’t surrendered more than 20 points in a game this season, with the offense starting to trend upwards behind quarterback Dillion Gabriel. Gabriel’s 15-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio is impressive, but the Sooner offense had some hiccups in games against Cincinnati and SMU, before exploding last weekend against Iowa State. The Sooners have to limit their mistakes and getting into difficult 3rd-and-long situations, which has been a trait this season. On the flip side, Texas has been dominant in both phases. Quarterback Quinn Ewers has taken a leap this season, and running back Jonathon Brooks has been a solid replacement for Bijan Robinson. Texas can strike fast with Ewers and his bevy of receiving options including Xavier Worthy, Ja'Tavion Sanders and Adonai Mitchell. The trio has combined for 15 plays of over 20-plus yards this season, and that doesn’t include Brooks’ gashing runs. Oklahoma has not faced a top 40 offense this season, and they rank in the lower half of the country in allowing explosive passing plays. That will be a major key to watch on Saturday.
