Don’t look now, but the Oklahoma Sooners just shook up the SEC. A huge win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa this past weekend has Brent Venables' team positioned to make the College Football Playoff. They control their own destiny, and with two wins in their final two games against Missouri and LSU, they should earn an at-large bid. If you blindly looked at the boxscore and saw Oklahoma’s 212 yards of offense, you’d think Alabama cruised to a win. But it was a vintage Venables defensive performance, as the Sooners had four sacks and forced three turnovers, including an 87-yard pick-six that flipped the game. Quarterback John Mateer’s stat line wasn’t impressive, but he made plays when he needed to in order to win the game and this result unlocked a lot of chaos scenarios for the CFP. Now the team will look to avoid a hangover as they welcome an old Big 12 foe to Norman. Missouri is coming off a big win over Mississippi State, where running back Ahmad Hardy ran for a whopping 300 yards and three touchdowns. The Sooner defense will be locked in on Hardy and will try to force backup quarterback Matt Zollers to beat them. The Oklahoma offense needs to find some rhythm as the season winds down. Missouri is the best defense in the SEC when it comes to yards allowed per game. Oklahoma did the hard part, going 3-1 in a stretch that included road games against Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Now they have to avoid a misstep to make the CFP for the first time since 2019.

Players to Watch

Ahmad Hardy - RB, Missouri - The outcome of this game could hinge on the performance of star Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy. Last week against Mississippi State, Hardy rushed for 300 yards and with starting quarterback Beau Pribula expected to miss his fourth straight game, the Tigers will rely on their running game for offensive production. However, Oklahoma has one of the best rush defenses in the SEC, holding opposing teams to under 83 yards per game. If Hardy can get going, Missouri may have a chance for their first win in Norman, Oklahoma in 59 years.

John Mateer - QB, Oklahoma - In the first 4 weeks of the season, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was playing like a Heisman trophy finalist as he averaged nearly 300 yards per game. But since breaking a bone in his throwing hand and missing several games, Mateer’s average has plummeted, including a season low 138 yards passing in last week's win against Alabama. Oklahoma won't necessarily need to lean on Mateer to win the game, but they'll need him to avoid mistakes, as Missouri had two pick sixes in their win against the Bulldogs last week.
