The Sci-Fi Buddy Duo You Didn't Know You Needed

The heart of Project Hail Mary is the relationship between Gosling’s character Ryland Grace and the alien he meets on his mission. Dubbed “Rocky” by Grace, the two overcome language barriers, personality differences, and general inter-species obstacles to form a tight bond under the most unlikely of circumstances.
Screenwriter Drew Goddard deserves a ton of credit for writing Rocky as a distinct character with personality quirks, foibles, and depth. But the real secret to the character might be in his design, with puppeteers bringing Rocky to life in a way that feels tangible and realistic. Between his exuberant movements, inquisitive personality, and infectious enthusiasm, Rocky is a fully fleshed out character that will amaze you.
Hard Science Meets Stunning Spectacle
It’s not easy to convey the difficult scientific concepts in Andy Weir’s original novel without grinding the story to a halt. Yet Project Hail Mary tackles this narrative conundrum with grace. The problem-solving nature of the scientific method is dramatized in real time, both in the flashbacks of Grace’s unconventional experiments on the Astrophage – the single-celled microorganism that threatens our sun – and Rocky and Grace’s trials and tests in space. By cutting back and forth between the months leading up to Grace’s journey into space and the events of his intergalactic mission, the film maintains a propulsive pace that never slows down.
Ryan Gosling's Incredible Solo Mission
For long stretches of Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling is the only character on screen. And even after he connects with Rocky, it’s left to Gosling to sell the emotional stakes. The fact that carries the weight of the story and generates real chemistry with his rockfaced co-star is a credit to both his charisma and skill. At a minimum, expect Gosling to earn a ton of consideration come awards season, and don’t be surprised if he takes home his first Academy Award on his fourth nomination.
Refreshingly Optimistic Sci-Fi

Dystopian science fiction has become a bedrock of modern cinema. As great as those films can be, the grim tone and cynical themes can be a bit much, especially given the problems of the real world. Project Hail Mary is a refreshing antidote to this darker strain of sci-fi. With themes about cooperation, sacrifice, and heroism, Project Hail Mary is both a tonic to bitterness and a celebration of mankind’s best qualities.
Real Humor and Heart
We haven’t yet mentioned the film’s directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Already Academy Award winners for their work on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Lord and Miller orchestrate the film deftly. Their background in comedy ensures that the jokes actually land, while their commitment to building real sets and utilizing puppetry rather than CG effects for Rocky give the film a tactile feel that’s rare in the realm of science fiction. Cinematographer Greig Fraser has a knack for stunning compositions, and the production design feels both pragmatic and aspirational. Project Hail Mary is the rare film where all its elements are faultless, resulting in a crowd-pleasing experience you’ll want to revisit again and again. To quote Rocky’s catchphrase: “Amaze Amaze Amaze.”
