Enter “Wary” Potter

In a delicious bit of ironic casting, Daniel Ratcliffe – Harry Potter himself – joins the franchise to play Walter Marbury, a tech genius who hates magic. Marbury manipulates the Horsemen into pulling off a heist that will give him the upper hand on a corporate rival. But when Walter’s true identity is revealed, the Horsemen will face their biggest threat yet.

In his post-Harry Potter career, Daniel Ratcliffe has demonstrated a willingness to play the comic foil, whether donning “Weird” Al’s signature hairpiece in his fake biopic, or more recently, as an exasperated documentary filmmaker on NBC’s The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins. Released the same year as Swiss Army Man – a film in which Ratcliffe plays a bloated corpse – Now You See Me 2 is the perfect showcase of Ratcliffe's versatility and comedic timing.

Ratcliffe has also characterized playing villains as a “rite of passage” for English actors in American cinema. In addition to this film, he also plays an evil, rich villain in 2022’s The Lost City. Even if he’s not exactly a villain, Ratcliffe has also shown an interest in dark films courtesy of roles in movies like Guns Akimbo, Horns, and *Imperium, where he plays an FBI agent who goes undercover with a white supremacist group.

Meet the new Horseman…err, Horsewoman

Taking over for Isla Fisher (who was pregnant and unable to participate in the sequel), Lizzy Caplan is the other major addition to the Now You See Me universe. As Lula May, Caplan brings her distinctly quirky energy to the film, and allows the movie to riff on the “macabre” magic subgenre popularized by magicians like Chris Angel.

Following her breakout role in Mean Girls, Caplan has long been a fixture of the “best show you’ve never heard of” strain of television. Her dry, acidic role in the cult favorite Party Down was a major part of the show’s appeal, while her more dramatic turn in SHOWTIME’s Masters of Sex showed her range. Most recently, Caplan appeared in the Netflix cyber-thriller Zero Day alongside Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemmons.

How Was the Now You See Me 2 Chip Scene Filmed?

If you thought the card-throwing tricks in the original film were impressive, it’s a mere warm up act next to the chip scene in Now You See Me 2. Using real sleight of hand magic tricks, the actors underwent “magic boot camp” to learn tricks so that director Jon M. Chu could shoot the elaborate card-passing scene while minimizing the use of CGI (Chu would go on to direct the two Wicked films and followed Now You See Me 2 with the international smash Crazy Rich Asians). In an interview with Letterboxd, Chu mentions that he still has the footage of the cast rehearsing the cardistry with professional magicians.
The techniques used by the Four Horsemen in the scene are real tricks you can learn. They include palming, backpalming, card manipulation, and card throwing. And for the record, the sequence of events finds the card moving from hand to sleeve, sleeve to pant leg, pants to shoe, and finally to Lula who hides it in, uh…maybe it’s better to watch for yourself in the clip above.

The Twist Ending: The Real Eye

Spoiler Warning for this section

No magic show – or a movie about magicians – would be complete without a mind-blowing twist or two, and the big reveals in Now You See Me 2 are all whoppers. First, there’s the scene where the Horsemen are seemingly thrown from a private jet to their deaths…only for Walter and his father Arthur (Michael Caine) to realize that their plane was actually a set floating on the Thames river. Even worse, their scheme has been broadcast the world over, and they’re arrested by the FBI, while the Horsemen make their escape.

The even bigger twist follows when the Horsemen are brought to the Greenwich Observatory to meet other members of the secret order known as “The Eye.” If you forgot, The Eye is revealed in the first film to be a secret, ancient order of highly-skilled magicians, and Ruffalo’s FBI character Dylan Rhodes Shrike was revealed to be the magician pulling the strings to recruit The Four Horsemen while getting revenge on those responsible for the death of his father. That included Morgan Freeman’s Thaddeus Bradley, who was framed for the original’s climactic heist. But in something of a double double-cross, it’s revealed in the sequel that Bradley was actually the leader of The Eye, and that his betrayal of Dylan’s father was part of an elaborate, three-decade ruse. He then names Dylan as his replacement, and recommends that Dylan begin planning for his own line of succession. Watch the big reveal for yourself in the clip below:
