Meet The Four Horsemen

The film centers around a popular Las Vegas magic act known as The Four Horsemen. As you might suspect, the group consists of four magicians who are brought together in the film’s opening scene by a secret organization known as “The Eye.” An ancient secret society composed of the highest-skilled magicians throughout history, The Eye isn’t just a cool club; its explicit mission is to use magic to rob from the rich and give to the poor.

Here’s a closer look at the magicians in The Four Horsemen:

The Illusionist – J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg)

As arrogant as he is talented, Atlas acts as the group’s de facto leader. Largely ditching the neurotic entitlement he brought to his breakout role in The Social Network, Eisenberg plays him with surprising charm and swagger.

The Mentalist – Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson)

Veteran actor Woody Harrelson portrays the rascally hypnotist Merritt McKinney. Despite his mental manipulations, Harrelson – as he so often does – makes his character fun and empathetic, largely due to his troubled history with his twin brother (a topic the sequel also explores). After breaking out on (and winning an Emmy for) Cheers, Harrelson has put together one of the most impressive and varied resumes in Hollywood, earning Oscar nominations for The People vs. Larry Flynt, The Messenger, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The Escape Artist – Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher)

As Henley, Fisher has both the glamour of a magician’s “lovely” assistant and the cutting sass of a former lover. Her escape scene from a piranha tank early in the film is harrowing, largely thanks to Fisher’s credible terror. It may not have been all an act. While reports vary (thanks to comments made by Fisher herself), there was an incident in which the chain really did get caught at the bottom of the tank, and, because Fisher was unable to reach the emergency stop, the crew wasn’t sure if she was still acting. Thankfully, Fisher later clarified that she was “safe the whole time.”

The Sleight of Hand – Jack Wilder (Dave Franco)

No magic heist crew would be complete without a “street” magician, and with his sly grin and slick attitude, Franco is completely believable.

Mark Ruffalo (who has a long history playing law enforcement agents in films and shows like Zodiac, Collateral, Shutter Island and most recently in Task) and Mélanie Laurent appear as government agents working to track down the Horsemen after they “break bad,” while Morgan Freeman costars as Thaddeus Bradley, a former magician who found success by revealing the secrets behind magic tricks (needless to say, this is seen by those in the magic community as highly taboo). Michael Caine rounds out the cast as wealthy insurance magnate Arthur Tressler who sponsors – and is betrayed by – The Four Horsemen.

Actual Magic or Movie Magic?

French director Louis Leterrier shrewdly blends real sleight of hand magic tricks with CGI enhancements, blurring the line between fantasy and reality…just like The Four Horsemen themselves. Here’s a look at how Leterrier and magic consultant David Kwong pulled off their tricks:

The Piranha Tank Escape

As you might suspect, Isla Fisher was not actually handcuffed in a sealed piranha tank for this stunt. However, the Australian actress really did learn to hold her breath for an extended period of time. The stunt is a nod to the “Water Torture” cell made famous by Harry Houdini.

The Vault Teleportation

Again, despite this writer’s most fervent desires, teleportation is not real. Nevertheless, the stunt is another homage to a famous illusion: David Copperfield’s “Portal.” For the shoot, the crew used mirrors and a pre-staged set in Paris to create the illusion.

Card Tricks

This is where the cast really did create magic. Jesse Eisenberg mastered card tricks like the one seen in the film’s opening, while the "sleight-of-hand-to-hand-combat" scene really did capture Franco throwing cards. "Dave Franco was an incredible workhorse, he had the most athletic uses of slight of hand in that fight scene," Kwong told Wired in 2013. "He's really producing hands of cards and throwing them.

Spoiler Warning for this section

The big reveal in Now You See Me is that The Four Horsemen’s recruitment into the secret magic order known as “The Eye” was orchestrated by none other than FBI agent Dylan Rhodes. You see, when Dylan was 12 years old, his father Lionel, an illusionist known as “The Great Shrike,” died while attempting to escape from a safe dropped into New York’s Hudson river. This grand illusion was billed as his comeback after his former friend Thaddeus Bradley exposed the secrets of tricks.

“From that moment on, I created a persona,” Rhodes tells his former partner Alma Dray in the closing scene at the Pont des Arts in Paris. “I planned, I worked out every detail.” Unwittingly, The Four Horsemen assisted Rhodes in his elaborate revenge scheme on all those responsible for his father’s death:

While The Four Horsemen may have been pawns in Rhodes’ scheme, their principals and ambitions made them the perfect “marks” to help execute the long con. Put another way, the Horsemen may have been deceived about the details, but they were willing participants all the same.

🔍 The Prestige: 5 Clues You Missed That Proved [REDACTED] Was the Mastermind

The beauty of Now You See Me is that the director Louis Leterrier and screenwriters Ed Solomon, Boaz Yakin, and Edward Ricourt hide the truth in plain sight. If you re-watch the film on Sling Freestream, keep an eye out for these specific moments where Dylan Rhodes practically announces who he is.

The "Failed" Interrogation

In the interrogation scene, Atlas successfully cuffs Dylan to the table. While it looks like Dylan is just a "clumsy Fed," a high-level FBI agent wouldn't be that easily overpowered by a magician unless he wanted to be. It was a calculated move to establish himself as incompetent in the eyes of the Horsemen's rivals.

The Cell Phone "Glitch"

Early in the investigation, Dylan's cell phone mysteriously rings with a restricted number. He acts frustrated and dismisses it. In reality, this was his method of communicating with the Horsemen to coordinate their next move without alerting the FBI or his partner, Alma.

The "Shrike" Connection in the Files

When Alma Dray begins researching the history of Lionel Shrike, Dylan is visibly uncomfortable but also strangely knowledgeable. He directs the investigation away from the safe manufacturer and toward Thaddeus Bradley. He wasn't solving the case; he was curating the evidence.

The Apartment Fight Scene

The famous fight between Dylan and Jack Wilder is a masterclass in misdirection. Dylan, an "untrained" agent, holds his own against a combat-ready magician using props and sleight-of-hand. Re-watching this, you’ll notice Dylan anticipates Jack’s moves because he choreographed them.

The "Missing" Keys

Throughout the film, Dylan frequently loses his keys or seems disorganized. For a man who eventually reveals himself as a master of precision, this was his "mask." By appearing overwhelmed (and even pointing the finger at Alma), he ensured that no one—especially the audience—would suspect him of having the mental bandwidth to run a multi-million dollar international heist.

Why You Need to Re-Watch It Right Now

Most viewers miss these clues on the first pass because they are focused on the "flash" of the Four Horsemen. However, once you know the ending, the movie becomes a completely different experience. It’s no longer a heist movie; it’s a revenge thriller hidden inside a magic show.

Don't take our word for it—see the "hand" behind the curtain. Catch every subtle wink and nod by streaming the full movie for free below.
