The Lifetime series Married at First Sight is a reality TV sensation. Since premiering in 2014, the show has featured three to five couples per season who reverse engineer their nuptials by marrying in the premiere and deciding whether or not to stay together in the finale. Statistically, it’s basically a coin-toss whether or not they’ll remain married, a credit to the relationship experts who work to find them a match prior to their 8-week trial run as a married couple. While 50-50 might not be a great metric for real world relationships (the CDC’s 2024 numbers claim that the American success marital success rate stands at approximately 58 percent), it makes for compelling, will-they/won’t they reality TV.

Fear Factor

Long before he became one of the world’s best-known podcasters, Joe Rogan hosted Fear Factor, a primetime NBC show whose premise could be summarized as, “I dare you to…” Airing from 2001 to 2006, most episodes featured six contestants – usually three men and three women – taking on three stunts, with the winner going home with a $50,000 cash prize. Typically, the first stunt would be some sort of physical test, followed by a more mental/ gastrointestinal challenge (aka eating/ immersing yourself in something gross), followed by a final challenge in the form of a big action stunt.

The show was extremely novel at the time, with few unscripted shows airing on network television. And with a new reboot hosted by Johnny Knoxville in the works at FOX, now’s the perfect time to get reacquainted with the original.

Cheaters

Another staple of early ‘00s television, Cheaters was a syndicated show in which a team of private investigators/ television producers got the scoop on spouses who were suspected of infidelity. As the show’s name suggests, pretty much every “case” did indeed catch a suspected cheater “creeping on the down low,” as TLC so eloquently put it. But what Cheaters lacked in suspense it more than made up for in drama, as the final act “confrontation” often saw a fight breaking out. In this respect, Cheaters shared a lot of DNA with another daytime TV staple of its era: Jerry Springer (which is also available on Sling Freestream).

Hot Ones

The internet’s favorite chicken-themed interview show now has a new home on Sling Freestream! Co-created and hosted by the estimable Sean Evans, Hot Ones features celebrities from the world of TV, movies, music, and more answering a series of questions as they eat a series of increasingly spicy hot wings. If this sounds absurd, it certainly is, but the show’s secret sauce is Evans’ talent as a host and interviewer. Come for the celebrities squirming in pain; stay for the surprising insights into their lives and personalities.

Dance Moms

Dance Moms helped launch the careers of talented young performers like Maddie Ziegler (and her mother Mackenzie), Chloé Lukasiak, Elliana Walmsley, and JoJo Siwa. But let’s be honest: You’re watching more for the moms than their dancing daughters. No judgements here; there’s nothing wrong with life’s guilty pleasures.
