The Jamie Oliver Channel
For our first course, we’d like to suggest the 24/7 channel from English chef Jamie Oliver. The pastry chef turned restaurateur has been a mainstay on British television since his first series The Naked Chef premiered in 1999. That show’s titillating title was more about the simplicity of his recipes than the host’s lack of wardrobe, but it illustrates Oliver’s focus on healthy eating and easy-to-make meals. The best-selling British non-fiction author of all-time, Oliver has become one of the most trusted names in what the Brits call “cookery.”
Cook’s Country Channel
The sister show to America’s Test Kitchen – which also has its own channel on Sling Freestream – Cook’s Country has been hosted by Bridget Lancaster and Julia Collin Davison since 2017, and features a number of ATK veterans in various segments. Each episode highlights a recipe for a different dish, often highlighting regional twists on favorites, like North Carolina Barbecue and Seattle Chicken Teriyaki. A staple of public television, Cook’s Country has provided chefs with an endless supply of inspiration for 17 seasons (and counting).
Emeril Lagasse Channel
Now we’re really cooking. Although he was born and raised in New England, Emeril Lagasse is an icon in the New Orleans food scene, thanks to his popularization of “New New Orleans” cuisine. He also helped launch the modern cooking show with the long-running Emeril Live, and thanks to catchphrases like “Kick it up a notch!” and “Bam!”, was one of the first widely recognized celebrity chefs. Still, if you’re on a diet, you may want to avoid watching too much of the Emeril Lagasse channel – just typing his name makes our mouth water.
Hell’s Kitchen/Kitchen Nightmares
If you’re getting a little too tempted to break that diet, why not tune into a channel featuring two shows that may make you want to never cook again: Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares. Hosted by impudent chef Gordon Ramsay, these shows are a perversely entertaining masterclass in humiliation and triumph (but mostly humiliation). Hell’s Kitchen is an elimination show where contestants are sent home one-by-one – often after getting told off by the host – while Ramsay turns his ire on underperforming restaurants in Kitchen Nightmares. If you’re looking for a bit of inspiration to keep your diet going, just visualize becoming the target of Ramsay’s wrath.
Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern
And finally, if there’s a show that could inspire you to never eat a bite of food again, it would be Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. To be clear, a lot of what Zimmern eats is considered a delicacy in various parts of the world. But to this basic American palate, they’re far outside what we’d consider trying. In the very first episode, Zimmern chows down on raw pig testicles, giant snails, and turtle blood. To many of us, this would be more of a Fear Factor-style test of will than edible food; for Zimmern, it’s just another lunch.
