The first of the two confirmed debates will take place on Thursday, June 27 at 9pm ET. Trump and Biden agreed to bypass the Commission on Presidential Debates in order to have their first debate in June, even before they accepted their party’s respective nominations. The debate will take place at CNN’s Atlanta studio.

What Are the Debate Rules and Format?
As Time notes in this article , because the debate is not associated with the Commission on Presidential Debates, a number of new rules will be in place. They include:
- No opening statements - While neither candidate will issue an opening statement, they will both be allowed a two-minute closing statement. During the debate, the candidates will have two minutes to respond to each question, followed by a one minute rebuttal.
- Commercial breaks - The 90-minute debate will include two commercial breaks, a change from previous debates. However, during the commercial messages, campaign staff will not be allowed to interact with their candidates.
- No live audience - To minimize distractions, there will be no studio audience during the debate.
- Microphone muting - In perhaps the strongest rebuke to former President Trump’s interruptions during the 2020 Presidential debates, each candidate’s microphones will be muted except when it’s their turn to speak. Both candidates agreed to follow all rules as part of their participation in the debate.
When is the Next Presidential Debate?
The only other debate that’s currently scheduled is slated for September 10, hosted by ABC News. David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate.
Will Other Candidates Participate in the Debate?
Because of the rules established by CNN, only Donald Trump and Joe Biden are eligible to participate in the June 27 debate. That means Independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. will not participate, although there is a possibility he meets the criteria in time for the second debate in September.
When Are the Party Conventions?
The Republican National Convention (RNC) is scheduled to take place July 15-18 in Milwaukee, WI. The RNC is scheduled to begin four days after sentencing takes place for the 34 felonies Trump was convicted of following his trial in May. The democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago.
