Jury deliberations have begun in the first of four trials involving former president Donald Trump. Could Trump Go To Jail If He’s Found Guilty?
Yes. However, according to former U.S. Attorney Harry Litman, there’s “no chance” that he’s imprisoned prior to November’s election. That’s because Trump is almost certain to appeal any and all of the 34 charges he’s facing, and any sentence he receives would be stayed until his appeal is heard, which would likely take years. Trump could also be given probation, rather than jail time, as a result of his conviction.
When Are Trump’s Other Trials Scheduled to Begin?
Trump faces three other criminal cases, but none are expected to begin prior to November’s election.
Mishandling classified documents charges: This trial was originally expected to begin in May, but Judge Eileen Cannon – who was appointed by Trump during his presidency – has indefinitely postponed the trial because of pre-trial motions and concerns around the classified information contained in the documents.
Federal election interference: This trial was originally scheduled to begin in March, but Trump’s legal team successfully appealed the question of so-called “presidential immunity” to the Supreme Court. After hearing those arguments on April 25, the Supreme Court is expected to unveil its ruling by the end of June.
Fulton County, GA election interference: Along with 18 co-defendants (many of whom have pled guilty on plea deals), Trump is accused of pressuring election officials to change the results of the 2020 election. No trial date has been scheduled in this case.
