'America's Most Wanted' Returns: 5 Amazing Numbers Behind the Show

Original host John Walsh is back on 'America's Most Wanted'. Here are 5 amazing numbers behind the show, plus how to watch with Sling.

Now is not a good time to be a bad guy: America’s Most Wanted is back.

The long-running FOX show returns on Monday, Jan. 22 with the host most of us still associate with the show, John Walsh. This time, Walsh will be co-hosting the show with his son Callahan Walsh, but otherwise, the true crime pioneer should look and feel familiar to anyone who watched it over its 27 seasons: Reenactments of crimes committed by fugitives who are still on the run from the law, supplemented by interviews from law enforcement and the victims. As always, viewers can submit a tip online or by calling 1-866-AMW-TIPS.

America’s Most Wanted has played a role in bringing attention to thousands of dangerous criminals, an important and personal mission for John Walsh, whose six-year-old son Adam was abducted and murdered in 1981. Since the show’s premiere in 1988, America’s Most Wanted has led to the capture of nearly 1,200 fugitives. That’s but one of the many incredible statistics surrounding AMW. In honor of the show’s return, here’s a quick look at some of the show’s other fascinating figures.

1,190 - The number of fugitives who have been captured after appearing on AMW, as of 2021. John Walsh told Newsweek in 2021 that, factoring in other shows along with his work outside of television, he’s helped capture “more than 1,400 murderers, fugitives and wanted criminals.”

1,095 - The number of episodes of America’s Most Wanted, meaning they’ve captured more than one AMW fugitive for every episode that’s been broadcast.

4 - The number of days it took to apprehend the first criminal profiled on the show, convicted murderer and rapist David James Roberts.

17 - The number of “Ten Most Wanted” fugitives who the FBI says have been captured after being featured on the show.

4 - The number of weeks America’s Most Wanted was canceled for in 1996. In 2003, John Walsh told Larry King that 45 members of congress and 37 governors contacts FOX to get the show back on the air. “We were the shortest canceled show in the history of television,” Walsh told King.
