Here’s a look at our Top 5 Matches on the card.
Match #1 - AEW Tag Team Championship Match: Sting and Darby Allin vs. The Young Bucks
https://www.youtube.com/embed/o60NM_Kr4Uo?si=YlhQIJ75_gRHjpEi
The story - The story here is Sting’s last match. No other storyline comes close to the gravity of the Icon finally hanging it up after an impressive late career run in AEW (Sting looks better at 64 than this writer does at 32). Looking to spoil the party for Sting and his protege Darby Allin are none other than AEW’s EVP’s, Matthew and Nicholas Jackson (and you better call them by their full names). The Young Bucks have really leaned into their role as authority figures within the company, culminating in a vicious attack—with no consequences from management—on not only Sting and Darby Allin, but Sting’s sons, who were celebrating the Tag Team Championship win with him. Sting himself said that in his entire career, no one has ever brought his family into a feud. WIll this be the extra motivation the Stinger and Darby need to come out on top, or will the Young Bucks up their heelish ante by sending Sting to retirement with his first AEW pinfall?
Why we’re excited - If you are reading this, you know Sting and what he means to the business of wrestling as a whole. Whether you followed his storied career in WCW or subsequent renaissances in TNA, WWE (for a little while at least), and AEW, every wrestling fan has a memory associated with the Franchise of WCW. We won’t belabor it any further; regardless of how the match turns out, it will be a moment for the ages.
Adding to this already juicy storyline is the detestable behavior of the Young Bucks. Wrestling is no stranger to corrupt authority figures, and the Bucks are playing up this trope perfectly, constantly flaunting their untouchable status, even wrestling in a suit covered in their opponents’ blood from a previous attack. Every interview the Bucks do is laced with condescension, and no one is safe, from Tony Schiavone to Renee Paquette. I am sure I am not the only one who is ready to see them get their just desserts (the mark of a truly well-done villain). Adding to the intrigue is Ric Flair. Everyone assumed he was on Sting’s side for the final match given his history, but lately AEW has been hinting at some sort of dealings with the Bucks. Will the “dirtiest player in the game” Ric Flair get involved in Sting’s last match, and whose side is he on?
Match #2 - AEW Women’s Championship Match: Toni Storm vs. Deonna Purrazzo
The story - You’d have to excuse a mega star like Toni Storm for seemingly looking down at the rest of the Women’s division in AEW. After all, she is even condescending towards her biggest fan, Mariah May. Honestly, she has been on quite a roll since recapturing the belt, so who can blame her? To keep that going, she will have to contend with the Virtuosa herself, Deonna Purrazzo. Purrazzo is a multi-time champion with reigns in both TNA and ROH. Furthermore, she has quite a history with Toni Storm from their pre-AEW lives: They even share a bond in the form of a tattoo. That bond will be tested – and likely broken – as the two collide at Revolution. Will Toni Storm turn in another Oscar-worthy performance, or will AEW”s most recent splash in the Women’s division flip the script?
Why we’re excited - When we see Toni Storm (or the screen go black and white), we watch; it’s that simple. Whether crushing her opponents with a brutal hip attack or spitting improvised bars at the commentary desk, she is legitimately one of the most entertaining acts we can remember in wrestling. The way she has subtly evolved this character week-over-week has been a master class. If anyone can end her momentum, it is someone with the pedigree of Deonna Purrazzo. At only 29, she has achieved more than most will in their entire career. She’s already climbed to the top of the mountain in ROH and TNA, and has clashed with Toni before in various promotions. She will have her opponent well-scouted, a dangerous advantage in the hands of a Virtuosa.
Match #3 - AEW World Championship Match: Samoa Joe vs. Swerve Strickland vs. Hangman Adam Page
https://www.facebook.com/sling/videos/292677993600904
The story - We’d hate to be Samoa Joe right now. He thought his opponent at Revolution was going to be whoever was left standing between Swerve and Hangman; thanks to that match going to a draw, he now gets to face both of them. There is no danger of collusion between those two though; they hate each other. Their rivalry has been extremely hot for a while, with Hangman most recently playing up an ankle injury to get a few shots in at Swerve on the go home episode of Dynamite. This could be anyone’s game, and we know the Samoan Submission machine will grip his title just as hard as his opponents in the Coquina Clutch.
Why we’re excited - Oftentimes in wrestling, there is a clear good guy vs. a dastardly villain. That is not the case here. All of these guys live in the gray, and with Hangman trending more towards villain status, it is easy to believe that any one of these guys will go to extreme lengths to secure the victory. Whatever alliances emerge in this match, expect them to be broken as soon as one wrestler turns his back.
Match #4 - Continental Crown Championship: Eddie Kingston vs. Bryan Danielson
The story - The prize here may be a belt, but this match is really about respect. Despite defeating Danielson in the Continental Classic to become the inaugural champion, the American Dragon has made it clear he does not respect Eddie Kingston. As a result, if Kingston is able to take down Danielson, Bryan will have to shake his hand in the middle of the ring. It is a simple story, but who can’t relate to feeling like no matter what you do, the respect you’re vying for is just out of reach. It helps that Danielson’s smirk feels so perfect for this role, and as popular as he is, there will certainly be a portion of the crowd who will want Kingston to land a backfist right into his face.
Why we’re excited - This match sort of mirrors Eddie’s story overall. As a chronic underdog who debuted for AEW in an open challenge, he always fought for respect and has been counted out on numerous occasions. Debuting for a major promotion in your late 30’s AND continuing to grind until you hold gold is incredible. It also somewhat mirrors Danielson’s underdog run as Daniel Bryan in WWE, making Danielson the perfect opponent for Eddie to cement his position. The forecast calls for a 120% chance of violence, with a high likelihood of blood. No matter who wins, everyone will be sore.
Match #5 - Will Ospreay vs. Konosuke Takeshita
https://www.youtube.com/embed/yOaijQExO6k?si=9gaXIgu-uEqsKtyM
The story - Having bested Kenny Omega and tapped Jericho out in his own submission, Takeshita is so unstoppable that Don Callis is having to look within his own faction to find an opponent for the “Alpha” (at least that is the word according to Don Callis). We won’t complain though, as that handpicked opponent is one of the best wrestlers in the world, Will Ospreay. The phenom from across the pond will make his PPV debut as an official AEW signee. This is going to be an incredible showcase of the present and future of professional wrestling. Buckle up.
Why we’re excited - Sometimes it is as simple as watching two of the best to do it trade blows, and that is what we have here. While Sting’s career is closing out, you can argue these two have not even hit their prime yet (which should terrify the rest of the roster). A quick side note, Don Callis seems pretty sure it's a good idea for two of his best “family members” to go at it under the lights. Who are we kidding, we hope it does pull apart the Don Callis family; Callis deserves it.
