Original story below:
The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup will be the last major soccer tournament for the United States Men’s National Team before the country hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer. Sadly, things have not been going well for new manager Mauricio Pochettino. After a 2-1 loss to Türkiye leading into the tournament, Pochettino has become the first US manager in 10 years to lose three straight matches, which has brought his record to five wins and four losses.
That Türkiye loss is not the only story surrounding the team right now. Citing a need for rest after a long season with AC Milan, captain Christian Pulisic will not be on the squad. He is not the only USMNT staple that fans will notice missing from the roster. Important figures Weston McKennie, Timothy Weah, Giovanni Reyna, Antonee Robinson and Yunus Musah will also miss the tournament after long seasons with their European clubs. USMNT legend Landon Donovan has criticized the players' decisions to not play in the Gold Cup, which spurred a spicy response from Pulisic’s father on social media, where he said Donovan should ‘grow a pair and call names out or are you afraid…” In the 2023 edition of the tournament the US disappointingly lost to Panama in the semifinals, and now Pochettino will hope to find momentum for the team without his main stars.
Here’s a preview of all the groups, plus the schedule for the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup and how to watch with Sling!
