This weekend Germany’s top soccer league, the Bundesliga, will kick off its second round of matches since returning being the first team sports league to return from the worldwide pause in sports caused by the the coronavirus outbreak.

Last weekend league-leaders Bayern Munich picked up where they left off, beating scrappy upstarts Union Berlin 2-0 away from home. They’ll be glancing over their shoulder, as second- place Borussia Dortmund won their derby against fellow Champions League hopefuls Schalke, which keeps Dortmund (54 pts) just 4 points off Bayern (58 pts).

The results for the rest of the league’s top six teams were mostly positive, with Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen and Vfl Wolfsburg all registering away wins, and third-placed RB Leipzig settling for a home draw. Bottom-of-the-table SC Paderborn 07 had to be happy with a point away to fellow strugglers Fortuna Düsseldorf. Meanwhile, next-to-last-place Werder Bremen saw no improvement in their miserable league form as they lost 1-4 at home.

Fixtures to look forward to this match week include a Berlin derby on Friday as Hertha Berlin takes on Union Berlin, where the lack of fans will surely be felt, and a ‘6-pointer’ on Saturday: Borussia Monchengladbach (52 pts) vs. Bayern Leverkusen (50 pts) could have implications on final league positions and which team gets a coveted automatic Champions League qualification spot.
