How to watch Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New Orleans Saints from Paris

Watch the Steelers take on the Saints from Paris on NFL Network, Sunday, October 25 at 9:30 AM ET, with Sling Select, Blue, Essentials & Select, or Orange & Blue.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints represent the culture of their respective cities like few other American sports franchises. They’ll head across the Atlantic to represent their fans and communities as the Steelers face the Saints in the first-ever NFL game in Paris. It’s a battle of contrasts in both the identity of their cities (workmanlike and dutiful in Pittsburgh; carefree and creative in New Orleans) and the QBs that lead their teams. In his second season with the Steelers and having announced his retirement at the end of the year, Aaron Rodgers looks like the steady pilot they envisioned when bringing him on last season. His counterpart on the Saints, second-year QB Tyler Shough, is making a name for himself as he attempts to fill the shoes of Drew Brees’, the longtime Saints QB who was elected to the Hall of Fame ahead of the season.

Steelers vs. Saints from Paris preview

First and foremost, due to the civil unrest across France, it’s worth keeping an eye on this game potentially moving back to the U.S., most likely to the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans (the Saints are the designated home team for this one). Assuming it does take place as planned, New Orleans should feel right at home in Paris. The Stade de France was originally built for the 1998 World Cup, but it’s a massive venue with about 80.7k seats.

While the Saints enter the game at a middling 2-4, they’re in the mix of the NFC South race, which is currently led by the 3-2 Carolina Panthers. In their most recent win over the New York Giants, Tyler Shough made another strong bid to become their longtime starter. While he finished with just 144 passing yards, Shough accounted for 4 TDs, three passing, one on the ground. In the same game, Alvin Kamara joined an exclusive club of running backs with at least 5,000 career yards on the ground and through the air. And if you’ve seen the Saints play, you know they’re a lot better than their record suggests.

The Steelers are in a similar position, looking up at the shocking Cleveland Browns in a division where all four teams have winning records. As expected, the Steelers’ defense is leading the way, with T.J. Watt making an early case to win his second Defensive Player of the Year award. Watt is currently graded as the No. 1 run-defending edge player per PFF, and his stat line is typically robust: through five games, Watt has 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception, a defensive TD and two passes defensed. Surprisingly, it’s Aaron Rodgers’ play that has elevated the Steelers through their first six games. The last couple of seasons, the Hall of Famer has looked like a facsimile of his prime, but this year the numbers are better. With one more TD pass, Rodgers will move into third all-time with 540 TDs, trailing only Tom Brady and his former teammate, Brett Favre.

The Steelers’ are rightfully regarded for their pass rush, but the Saints actually have two players in the top 10 of sacks (Chase Young is tied for third with 5.5 sacks, while Carl Granderson is tied for 10th with 4). We see the defensive line for both teams putting pressure on the QBs to force them into mistakes. With an older QB adjusting to the time difference and travel, it feels like the Saints will have more success on that front. In a season that’s already had a number of close and compelling international games, this feels like it could be another.

Players to watch

Pittsburgh: Aaron Rodgers (QB)

At 42, Rodgers arrives in Paris chasing history. He's thrown for 1,487 yards with 12 touchdowns against 5 interceptions and an 88.0 passer rating, steady if unspectacular numbers that have been enough to keep the Steelers in the AFC North race. The milestone angle is the headline for a global-stage game: in Week 6 he moved into a third-place tie with Peyton Manning at 539 career TD passes, trailing only Brady and Favre. He's not carrying the offense the way he once did — PFF grades him just 21st among quarterbacks — so his job in Paris is to protect the ball and let Pittsburgh's defense win it.

New Orleans: Tyler Shough (QB)

Shough is the fuel of a Saints team that just snapped a three-game skid, and he did it with grit over polish — four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) on just 144 passing yards against the Giants, all while playing through an injury to his left, non-throwing hand. The second-year passer spread it around to his best weapons, hitting both Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara for scores. As the 'home' team in France, New Orleans will lean on Shough's dual-threat ability; if he's accurate and avoids the big mistake against T.J. Watt, the Saints can hang.
