Rams at Panthers Wild Card Preview
The Rams are one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl; the Panthers have a losing record and only won their division via tiebreaker. So it’s no surprise that the Rams opened as heavy 9.5 road favorites for this game. But don’t forget, Carolina has already beaten LA earlier this season as a 10-point underdog. The Panthers picked off MVP candidate Matthew Stafford twice in that game, accounting for a quarter of the interceptions he threw the entire season. And Bryce Young rallied his team for a fourth quarter comeback, an attribute he’s flashed over the past couple of seasons.
While their previous win should provide the Panthers with some confidence, they still know this game will require their best effort. Stafford is having perhaps the best season of his already storied career, and WR Puka Nacua is making a strong case he’s the best receiver in the NFL. The Rams’ defense is no slouch either, as OLB Byron Young finished tied for eighth in the league with 12 sacks, the same number as more celebrated pass rushers like Will Anderson and Josh Sweat. The Rams are a well-balanced team with highly polished skill players all over the field. But the Panthers have shown a lot of grit, and if they can ugly-up the game, they have a decent chance at pulling off the upset.
