Chargers at Patriots Wild Card Preview

After a mild post-Brady slump, the Patriots are back where they’ve been for the better part of this century: Near the top of the AFC standings. Under first year coach Mike Vrabel – the current betting favorite to win Coach of the Year honors – the Pats have quickly turned the ship around, improving from 4 wins a year ago to a 14-3 record this year. A Week 1 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders is all that kept them from the top seed in the AFC playoffs, and second-year QB Drake Maye looks not only like a franchise QB, but a legit MVP contender.

The Chargers are also well-versed in how an experienced head coach can turn a franchise around. Now in his second year with the team, Jim Harbaugh has done an excellent job navigating an injury-depleted roster; given the number of key players on IR, there may not be a bigger playoff surprise than the Chargers. Even starting QB Justin Herbert has dealt with the injury bug, and he’ll be returning from a week of rest to his broken left hand in this one. The Chargers are infamous for their playoff collapses, including last year when they were smoked by the Texans. But Herbert is an elite QB and if the underrated Chargers defense can force the inexperienced Maye into a turnover or two, they could be in line to earn their first playoff win since the 2018 season.
