49ers at Eagles Wild Card Preview
The San Francisco 49ers entered Week 18 with a chance to claim the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Instead, their 13-3 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks sent them tumbling all the way down to No. 6, earning them a matchup against the team that kept them from the Super Bowl three years ago, the Philadelphia Eagles. Both teams look a lot different from the last time they met in the playoffs. For the 49ers, QB Brock Purdy is much more seasoned, having led his team to a painfully close Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs in the following season. But the Eagles are a much more experienced team too, especially after beating the pants off those same Chiefs last season.
Still, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Niners running back Christian McCaffrey is the engine that powers the 49ers offense, particularly as a pass-catcher. San Francisco needs to put up points to win this game, as their defense has been riddled with injuries this season. The Eagles have the opposite problem: Their defense has been excellent in games like their recent win over the Bills, but their offense has sputtered. Saquon Barkley was the key in many of their wins last year, and Jalen Hurts elevates his game in the playoffs. In spite of some of their struggles this year, Philly remains a dangerous team, and the winner of this matchup is positioned to make a deep run in the playoffs.
