What is the new format for the NBA All-Star Game?

According to the NBA, this will be the first time the All-Star Game will feature, “a mini-tournament with four teams and three games. Two teams will meet in one semifinal (Game 1), and the remaining two teams will meet in the other semifinal (Game 2). The winning teams from Game 1 and Game 2 will advance to face each other in the championship (Game 3). For each game, the winner will be the first team to reach or surpass 40 points.”
Three of the teams will comprise eight All-Stars each, all hand-picked by the TNT analysts that drafted them: Team Chuck (Charles Barkley), Team Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal), and Team Kenny (Kenny Smith). The fourth team will be the winning squad of the Rising Stars Game, “the annual showcase of top first- and second-year NBA players and NBA G League standouts, which will be played on Friday, Feb. 14 during NBA All-Star 2025.” TNT analyst Candace Parker will be honorary general manager of that team.
Per tradition, the teams will be coached by the teams with the best record in the Eastern and Western Conference – Kenny Atkinson of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Mark Daigneault of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Those coaches will pick one of their assistants to coach the remaining All-Star team and the Rising Stars champion.
There’s a prize pool of $1.8 million up for grabs: Each player on the winning team will get $125k, with the second-place team receiving $50k, and the third and fourth place teams taking home $25k.
