As has been the case in the NBA in recent years, the rich just keep getting richer. On Monday, the Brooklyn Nets announced the signing of six-time All-Star Blake Griffin, who was released by the Detroit Pistons in February. The signing comes just months after the Nets also acquired former MVP James Harden from the Houston Rockets, giving them an even deeper squad as they make a push to earn the top seed in the East.
If 76ers star Joel Embiid keeps it up, that may be much more difficult than it sounds. According to the William Hill Sportsbook, Philly’s big man has surpassed LeBron James as the betting favorite for the MVP Award and is currently fetching +200 odds to claim the title, compared to +225 for James. Other big names in the MVP race include Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic (+350 odds), Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic (+1300), Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (+1400) and Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (+1600).
Other storylines as we enter the season’s second half include the March 25 trade deadline, which could see big names like scoring leader Bradley Beal and Bulls forward Thaddeus Young shake up the playoff race; whether the Lakers and Clippers can catch up to the league’s best team in the season’s first half, the Utah Jazz; if young NBA stars like Zion Williamson of the Pelicans, Devin Booker of the Suns, and Hornets rookie LaMelo Ball can lift their teams into the playoffs; and some spiffy new duds for last year’s bubble teams.
All that, plus fans, as we should start to see more and more of them in seats as the season wears on.
