Watch US Open Golf, Plus Players Describe The Event In One Word
Golf’s third major heads to the home of American golf in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Can Scottie Scheffler continue his historic run? Or will someone else pass golf’s ‘toughest test’?
For the first time since 2014, the US Open is returning to the home of American Golf. One of the best courses in the country, Pinehurst’s No. 2 will host the 124th edition of the tournament. It’s a unique US Open venue and it tests a lot of different skills compared to past US Opens. Long rough and narrow fairways have been typical prerequisites to hosting the event, but instead of rough you have sandy waste areas. But Pinehurst's biggest defense is the greens. The iconic, slick ‘turtle back’ greens designed by the great Donald Ross will be a real headache for the players. If you miss in the wrong area, it can lead to a big score. Your short game has to be dialed in, and you will be forced to play more strategic golf than your typical “bomb and gouge” tour stop.
All eyes will be on Scottie Scheffler, as the Masters winner is having a historic season that is drawing comparisons to the great Tiger Woods.

PGA Tour Players Describe the US Open With One Word
The US Open is known for being the ‘toughest test in golf.’ Fans love the carnage it typically provides and the age-old saying of ‘protecting par.’ In the past three US Opens at Pinehurst, the winners shot 1-under (Payne Stewart), Even (Michael Campbell) and 9-under (Martin Kaymer). Kaymer is the outlier, but 2nd place behind him was 1-under par. So you get the idea; this week should be a tough test for the players, and they know it. Here's some of the top talent in the PGA describing the US Open in one word:

Pinehurst No. 2
As we briefly mentioned above, Pinehurst No. 2 brings a lot of different challenges than your classic US Open or PGA Tour stop. Before the 2014 US Open at Pinehurst, famous architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw provided a restoration to the course that brought it back to its roots. To the naked eye, Pinehurst No. 2 looks less manicured. But this is actually the best part of this iconic track. Scruffy bunkers and wispy waste areas lead to unpredictable lies and fortunes. Combine that with greens that are slick and raised, you’ll have to be on your Ps and Qs. Most of the time, players will not aim at the flag and will settle for the middle of the green. And don’t be surprised if you see a lot of putting from off the green or players even using woods and irons for chipping. All in all, you can’t leave yourself above the hole or in areas where it’s impossible to stop the ball. Easier said than done, right?
Scottie Scheffler vs The Field
In the past two months, Scottie Scheffler has won five of his last eight starts, got arrested, and welcomed his first child to the world. The five wins includes a major and four signature events, while his other three starts featured two second place finishes and an 8th place finish where he literally was in a jail cell hours before his second round tee time. So, Rory McIlroy wasn’t wrong when he joked that only a jail cell could keep Scheffler from winning. Scottie is on a tear that we haven’t seen since Tiger Woods, which is truly saying something. He’s the first player since 2001 to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational, THE PLAYERS Championship, The Masters Tournament, and The Memorial Tournament in the same year. And in that timeframe, his results vs the field average is mind blowing, as golf writer Kyle Porter captures in this tweet:

Scottie will look to win his first US Open tournament this week at Pinehurst, a course that, quite frankly, perfectly fits his game. You need to be straight off the tee and precise with your iron shots into the turtle back greens. Scottie is far and away the best iron player in the world and now that he has figured his putter out, you see why he is a 3-to-1 favorite to win the tournament.
