Last year’s clash between these two teams saw Alabama narrowly escape with a 20-19 victory. The Longhorns kicked a go-ahead field goal with 1:29 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Bryce Young calmly led the Crimson Tide down the field on a nine play, 61-yard drive that resulted in a game winning field goal. Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game with a shoulder injury in the first quarter. Hudson Card did his best to upset the No. 1-ranked Tide but Bryce Young’s heroics saved Nick Saban and company.
What to Expect This Year
This year, Alabama is the team with an unknown at the quarterback position. Saban went with Jalen Milroe against MTSU, and the redshirt sophomore dazzled. He accounted for five total touchdowns against a lesser opponent, and didn’t make any mistakes. This was the first quarterback battle Alabama has had since 2016, when Jalen Hurts beat out Blake Barnett and Cooper Bateman. New offensive coordinator Tommy Reese has plenty of talent to help Jalen Milroe, especially in the running back room.
Texas on the other hand have their man in Quinn Ewers. Yes, Arch Manning is waiting in the wings, and Ewers had some iffy moments vs. Rice, but the sophomore means business this year, and has plenty of help around him. Wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Georgia transfer A.D. Mitchell are elite talents and Ja’Tavion Sanders is a quintessential NFL tight end. Every game Texas lost last year was by one possession, so the Longhorns are close to breaking through. Unlike their matchup with Alabama last season, Sark’s team really has everything they need to finally be “back” and finish the job. But with both teams opening up the season vs lesser opponents, it’s tough to know exactly where each ball club is at. This is a great barometer for both teams, much like last season’s match up.
