With the staggered start to the college football season, the schedule and games in the early going have been mixed to say the least. That changes this weekend when the SEC’s conference-only 10-game schedule ratchets up the pressure courtesy of a couple marquee matchups.
With the possible exception of #13 Texas A&M at #2 Alabama, the biggest game of the week is #7 Auburn against #4 Georgia in the Bulldogs’ home opener. Auburn looked great in their 29-13 win over the then-No. 23 Kentucky Wildcats last weekend. The defense forced three turnovers and had eight tackles for loss, and sophomore QB Bo Nix looked great throwing (and punting) the ball. In fact, ESPN writer Alex Scarborough makes a compelling case that if they can get past the Bulldogs, Auburn could be sitting at 5-0 by the time they hit the most difficult stretch of their schedule beginning with a Halloween matchup against LSU.
Georgia comes into the game with a major question at quarterback. That’s not a figure of speech; coach Kirby Smart has not yet named his starter, as of this writing. D’Wan Mathis got the call for Georgia’s opener at Arkansas, but was pulled in the second quarter after a rough start. His replacement, former walk-on Stetson Bennett may not get the start either, as transfer JT Daniels — who tore his meniscus and ACL in the opening game of the 2019 season while making his debut for USC — has been medically cleared and will be available against Auburn.
The pressure of primetime adds even more stakes to an unusually important game in just the second week of the SEC’s schedule. Here’s a look at the full slate of this week’s college football games on Sling, including postponements.
