Aamir Ali lives a fairly normal life in Koduvally and runs a clothing shop while living with his family and trying to build a life of his own. But his family has a history that is anything but ordinary.

Aamir’s grandfather was once a powerful name in the world of gold smuggling in his days of youth. And as Aamir gets pulled into that world, his life changes very quickly. With family history, money, crime, gold, and revenge, everything starts becoming impossible to separate.

What begins as a story about a young man and his family gradually opens into a much larger criminal world, stretching from Kerala all the way to the Middle East. And that is where Aamir has to figure out what he is willing to do to protect what belongs to him.

What Makes ‘Khalifa: The Ruler’ an Interesting Watch?

Khalifa is unapologetically a big commercial Malayalam action film. There is a sprawling family history, a gold-smuggling network, international locations, confrontations, and plenty of action. Vysakh has always been comfortable with this kind of large-scale cinema, and the film leans into that style rather than trying to be a quiet crime drama.

Who Directed ‘Khalifa: The Ruler’?

The film is directed by Vysakh, whose filmography includes commercial Malayalam hits such as Pokkiri Raja and Pulimurugan. He reunites with writer Jinu V. Abraham, who builds the story around the Ali family's criminal legacy and the world of gold smuggling.

Is ‘Khalifa: The Ruler’ Worth Watching?

If you are looking for a grounded, realistic crime investigation, this may not be the first film to pick. But if you enjoy Prithviraj Sukumaran in a larger-than-life role, stylish action, family crime sagas and the sheer fun of watching major Malayalam stars share the screen, Khalifa has plenty to offer.
