Point Break
Released July 12, 1991
Between Speed, The Matrix, and John Wick, Keanu Reeves has an illustrious streak of hit summer blockbusters. But his first big summer hit – 1991’s Point Break – is basically the platonic ideal of the genre: Action-packed, absurd, and wildly entertaining. This is a film about a former college quarterback who goes undercover for the FBI to bust a gang of bank-robbing surfers; if that doesn’t get you fired up, the summer blockbuster just isn’t for you. Keanu and co-star Patrick Swayze bring oceans of charm to their roles, and the supporting roles are filled out by memorable turns from Gary Busey, Lori Petty, and even Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Endlessly rewatchable and loaded with memorable moments and scenes, Point Break is the perfect summer movie.

Labyrinth
Released June 27, 1986
If your kids are home from school this summer, it’s the perfect time to introduce them to this 1986 Jim Henson classic. Labyrinth stars a young Jennifer Connelly and, in his most memorable film role, rock icon David Bowie. Featuring some of the most sophisticated puppetry of Henson’s storied career, Labyrinth may not have been a massive blockbuster upon its release, but it’s gone on to become a beloved children’s classic. In fact, it was recently announced that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers will be making a sequel.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Released July 3, 1991
It’s difficult to overstate the impact that Terminator 2: Judgement Day had upon its release in the summer of 1991 (one week before Point Break, in fact). Not only did it reaffirm Arnold Schwarzenegger’s status as the biggest movie star in the world, but it established The Terminator as one of the most popular and enduring franchises in science fiction. It was also the first film to extensively use CGI for one of its primary characters. T2 was the most expensive film ever made at that point, a price tag that was justified when it became the third-highest grossing movie of all time by the end of its run. But most importantly, the film instantly entered the pantheon of classic sequels, joining The Godfather Pt. II and The Empire Strikes Back on the short list of second films that not only equal, but arguably surpass the original. Throw in the catchphrases (“Hasta la Vista, Baby”), the Guns N’ Roses tie-ins, and even the now-iconic costuming, and you have the components of one of the most influential films ever made.

Arthur
Released July 17, 1981
One of the summer comedies of the ‘80s, Arthur had a slow burn at the box office on its way to becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 1981. One of the early examples of the “man-child” subgenre that would become Will Ferrell’s bread and butter, Arthur stars Duddley Moore as a drunken trust fund baby who must choose between the woman he loves (Liza Minneli) and the one his family has picked to earn his inheritance. In addition to its success at the box office, Arthur was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning two: Best Supporting Actor for John Gielgud as Arthur’s trusted butler Hobson, and Best Original Song for “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)”.

One Crazy Summer
Released Aug. 8, 1986
There once was a film set in Nantuckit/ ‘Bout a kid who’s named Hoops but can’t chuck it/ He makes some new friends and wins in the end/ It’s slobs-vs-snobs, who can suck it.
Given this film’s iconic setting, we couldn’t help but write a limerick. But if you’re a movie fan of a certain age, you have at least vague memories of this classic ‘80s teen comedy, which helped jump start the careers of John Cusack and Demi Moore, along with character actors Bobcat Goldthwait, Curtis Armstrong, and Joel Murray. On the heels of 1985’s Better off Dead, One Crazy Summer was the second collaboration between writer-director Savage Steve Holland and John Cusack. The animated scenes were directed by Bill Kopp, who, along with fellow animators David Silverman and Was Archer, would go on to direct The Simpsons.
