Forensic Files

One of the shows that put the true crime format on the map, Forensic Files debuted in April 1996 under the name Medical Detectives. Rebranding after season four, the series continued for 14 seasons and 400 episodes, across three different networks. Today, it’s seen as a groundbreaking show not just for the genre, but for its focus on forensic science, which was barely emerging when it first premiered.

The influence of Forensic Files is not only limited to other true crime shows. The hit CBS series CSI: Crime Scene Investigators lifted many elements from Forensic Files, including the stylization of its flashbacks. The show is also memorable for its narrator, Peter Thomas, who worked on all 400 episodes before passing away at the age of 91 in 2016.

Although Forensic Files is rightfully considered a pioneer in the true crime space, not all of its episodes focused on criminals; frequently, episodes would show how forensic science could help exonerate the innocent. In this way, the show demonstrated how forensic investigators could not only assist law enforcement, but criminal justice reformers working on behalf of those who had been falsely imprisoned.

With more episodes than there are days in a year and an impact that extends beyond the TV screen, you don’t need a degree in forensics to figure out that Forensic Files is one of the most important true crime shows. With Sling Freestream, you can watch all 15 seasons and 400 episodes!

Meet, Marry, Murder

As true crime fans know all too well, many murder investigations involve spouses and partners. As its name indicates, Meet, Marry, Murder focuses on these types of crimes. Each hour-long episode – which uses extensive interview and documentary footage instead of reenactments – is centered on one of these cases: The very first episode tells the story of Kelly Cochran, and the episode’s description says, “Kelly and Jason Cochran made a pact to kill anyone who came between them. Jason had no idea Kelly would get a taste for murder.” According to IMDB, other top-rated episodes focus on the Malcolm Webster case, an episode on UKIP Councillor Stephen Searle, and one that’s about murder by an alligator.

Sleeping With a Killer

Because of the unfortunate prevalence of violent attacks among domestic partners (see Meet, Marry, Murder above), there are plenty of permutations on these tragic stories in the true crime space. On Sleeping With a Killer, the focus is on murders committed by jilted and jealous former lovers. With stories from across the nation and even the globe and victims ranging in age from seniors to teens, Sleeping With a Killer shows that crimes of passion can strike anywhere and affect people of all ages.

The First 48

With 27 seasons and over 450 episodes since premiering on A&E in 2004, The First 48 is one of the most popular and influential true crime series ever to air. Like Forensic Files, the focus of the show is on the investigators attempting to crack the case (its title refers to the crucial window of time investigators aim for when attempting to solve a crime). Each episode tackles a different case, and while the investigations often continue beyond the 48-hour window, the show’s ticking clock format makes it highly compelling and bingeable. With multiple spin-offs and new episodes still in production, The First 48 seems as if it will be around as long as there are homicides in need of solving.

Unsolved Mysteries

For true crime fans of a certain age, it’s highly likely that their first exposure to the genre came when watching Unsolved Mysteries in the late ‘80s. Although the show aired on multiple networks (including a recent revival at Netflix) and featured a number of different hosts, the series’ most iconic run was its first iteration, hosted and narrated by the unmistakable Robert Stack. The show’s focus was also as broad as its title, investigating not only cold cases and crimes, but UFOs and the paranormal. The resulting show ping-ponged between a variety of subjects, while always piquing its viewers' curiosity (and getting its theme song lodged in their heads).

Cold Case Files

Fitting for a show that focuses on dormant cases, Cold Case Files has been canceled and revived multiple times since first premiering on A&E in 1999 (like Unsolved Mysteries, its current iteration streams on Netflix). Veteran broadcaster Bill Kurtis guides viewers through “the twists and turns of one murder case that remained unsolved for years, and the critical element that heated it up, leading to the evidence that finally solved it.” Unlike many other true crime shows where the perpetrator is quickly identified and arrested, Cold Case Files is particularly compelling due to the criminal appearing to get away with it, only to face justice years or even decades after the fact.
