Baywatch
Nothing says summer nostalgia like Baywatch, the classic syndicated series that ran for 11 seasons from 1990 to 2001. Starring old school icon David Hasselhoff and ‘90s bombshell Pamela Anderson, Baywatch was a sensation during its original run. At its peak, Baywatch was the most-watched TV show in the world, drawing a weekly audience of over 1.1 billion viewers. While it may have been cheesy at times, there’s an obvious and undeniable appeal in watching good-looking lifeguards protect the beaches of southern California.

The Riffleman
Chuck Connors starred in this iconic western series, which aired on ABC from 1958 to 1963. Despite its familiar setting in the 1880s American west, The Riffleman was groundbreaking in a number of different ways. Not only was it one of the first TV series to show a single parent raising a child – the series opens with protagonist Luscas McCain and his son Mark moving to a ranch in the New Mexico territory following the death of his wife – but the show helped launch the careers of guest stars like James Coburn, Harry Dean Stanton, Robert Vaughn, and Dennis Hopper.

The Dick Van Dyke Show
Widely considered one of the greatest sitcoms of all-time, The Dick Van Dyke Show helped launch the careers of multiple comedy legends. Obviously there’s Dick Van Dyke himself, who, curiously, played comedy writer Rob Petrie, as well as Mary Tyler Moore, who played Rob’s wife Laura. The series was created by Carl Reiner, who based the show and many of its characters on his own life (Reiner appeared on The Dick Van Dyke Show as Alan Brady, the host of the show-within-the-show). Airing for five seasons from 1962-1966, The Dick Van Dyke Show won 15 Emmy awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Mad About You
Starring comedian Paul Reiser and future Oscar-winner Helen Hunt, Mad About You was one of NBC’s flagship comedies of the 1990s. As part of that prestigious lineup, Mad About You featured a number of crossover episodes with other NBC comedies, including Friends – whose star Lisa Kudrow appeared as Ursula on the series, leading Friends writers to incorporate her character into their series as Phoebe’s twin – and multiple crossover episodes with Seinfeld. Mad about You even brought back Carl Reiner’s Dick Van Dyke Show character Alan Brady, connecting it to the lineage of multiple generations of sitcoms.

The Greatest American Hero
Lastly, given that summer is superhero season, we have to give a shout out to The Greatest American Hero, the early ‘80s hit from one of that decade’s most acclaimed TV creators, Stephen J. Cannell (The A-Team, Hunter). The series focused on a high school teacher (William Katt) who is given a superhero costume from extraterrestrials that gives him a number of special abilities…all of which he must discover on his own since they never explained how the suit works. The show’s lighthearted blend of humor and action felt like an early template for Marvel and its memorable theme song by Joe Scarbury became a Top 5 hit on the Billboard pop charts in 1981.
