When We Were Kings

“The Rumble in the Jungle” is arguably the greatest boxing match ever staged. A showdown between Heavyweight title-holder George Foreman and cultural icon Muhammad Ali, the fight was held the night before Halloween from Kinchasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1974. Much more than a simple title bout, “The Rumble in the Jungle” became one of the signature sporting events of the 20th century, and solidified Ali’s case as the greatest boxer of all time. When We Were Kings took its director Leon Gast 22 years to edit and finance, but it was well worth the wait. Sports Guy and cultural critic Bill Simmons has called it his favorite sports documentary and the film won the Oscar for Best Documentary at the 69th Academy Awards.

The Aristocrats
Wanna hear a dirty joke? If so, you’ll love The Aristocrats. Directed by comedians Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza, the film explores the origins of an absolutely filthy joke that has been riffed on by stand up comics for decades. Obviously, the documentary is gut-busting, but it’s also a fascinating exploration of the history of stand up, from its origins in vaudeville to its evolution into one of the most popular forms of live entertainment. More than just a punchline, “The Aristocrats” scratches and prods at the concept of humor itself, making it as harrowing as it is hilarious.
