Good news for those who have been chasing the Kardashians for 14 years and 20 seasons: You only have a couple months left.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians is about to air its final episodes, beginning with tonight’s season premiere at 8pm ET on E!. For a reality show about one of the most famous families in the world, the season premiere sets up stories that are surprisingly relatable: Kim is stressed over her law school homework, Scott is newly single and insecure (he knows he comes with “designer baggage”), and Khloé and Tristan are struggling with fertility issues. The genius of KUWTK is that although it’s been a crucial stitch in the their tapestry of billion dollar businesses, the show often feels like you’re dropping in on the small moments that tighten the threads of family (and perhaps brand loyalty).
In that respect, it may truly be the end of an era when the Keeping Up With the Kardashians airs its final episode, despite the family having signed a new deal with Hulu. In terms of their ability to capture attention and transmute it into business opportunities, the Kardashians are unquestionably the most successful family of 21st century America (and yes, I’m including Kanye, whose publicity tactics went nuclear during his marriage to Kim). The attention economy has a fast and fickle trading floor, so it’s easy to think their stock may not be able to sustain its current level of growth. Those of us old enough to remember the experience of watching Kim Kardashian ascend to fame might think otherwise. Only one bet seems certain to pay off: America will be watching.
In honor of the show’s final season, we put together a curated list of episodes featuring the best moments from throughout the show’s run. Here are five of our favorites; click the “On Demand” tab in the Sling app to check out the full list.
“I’m Watching You” (S1, Ep1)
From the The Tyra Banks Show to the non-HD cameras, revisiting the episode that started it all is like opening a time capsule from 2007.
“A Surprise Engagement Part 2” (S9, Ep5)
Kim’s relationship with Kanye West has been a subject of tabloid fascination since they got together, and the extravagance of their engagement at a rented-out baseball stadium might have been the peak of the public’s interest.
“About Bruce (Part 1-2)” (S10, Ep10-11)
When Caitlyn Jenner came out as transgender, she was rightly hailed as a pioneer in the trans movement. These episodes deal with the impact on her family and provide an intimate and honest look at the Kardashian-Jenners as Caitlyn begins her new life.
“Paris” (S13, Ep2)
KUWTK has always shown us the highs and lows of the family. In terms of the latter, their darkest moment may have been when Kim was robbed at gunpoint while visiting Paris during fashion week. This episode focuses the aftermath of the event, and regardless of the specifics of the robbery, it’s a harrowing look at the trauma experienced by crime victims.
“True Story” (S15, Ep13)
Because of the family's celebrity status, there’s always been a tension between the events of the show and the rumor mill that runs alongside it. This comes to a head in “True Story,” which deals with Khloé dealing with tabloid news about her boyfriend’s infidelity while about to give birth to their child.
Tune-in to the final season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians Thursday nights at 8pm ET on E!
