When the love of your life is located in a Ukrainian war zone or remote Filipino village, how do you keep the spark alive? Season after season, the 90 Day Fiancé cast have mastered managing their encounters on an Internet-only basis (think WhatsApp, FaceTime and the ever-mysterious “international dating app”).
It’s only recently that the rest of us have landed in that boat.
While current events have provided a profound appreciation for the struggles of remote romance, I loved the franchise even before I could identify so closely with it. And there’s a whole lot to love. The original 90 Day Fiancé follows couples consisting of an American and a foreigner, who must marry within a 90 day period before the foreigner’s visa expires. In the early seasons, the show had an almost documentary-like tone, following each couple acclimating to a life lived together. As its popularity grew and multiple spin-offs were spun, the storylines have become increasingly (but lovingly) bonkers.
The franchise’s upcoming limited series 90 Day Fiancé:Self-Quarantined is perhaps its most unique. Filmed in accordance with social distancing norms, it catches up with over 40 former cast members, some of whom have not been heard from in years. Whether you (like me) are looking to refresh your memory on certain castmembers, or just want some good preamble material before the new season starts, we’ve got you covered.
Yamir (90 Day Fiance Season 2)
Who could forget the Nicaraguan Justin Bieber? The answer is me. I could (and did. whoops). I know, I know...dreamy boy band hair and all.
Star of the much-lauded (I assume?) pop group Myla Vox, Yamir had given it all up to move to middle-of-nowhere Illinois with his “Northern Sunflower,” Chelsea. And while the two seemed downright gleeful at their woodsy wedding, the internet has since informed me that they are now divorced.
With Yamir set for a Self-Quarantined appearance, we can only pray for a surprise Myla Vox reunion (or, at the very least, a new song to keep our spirits high).
Brett and Daya (90 Day Fiancé Season 2)
When we first met Brett, he was living with two human roommates (who are, he explains “about my mother’s age”) and an extremely large bird. Brett’s roommates (who did seem genuinely loving, and not in a creepy way) came in particular handy as he readied his room for Daya, his wife-to-be, who was flying in from the Philippines. Brett, definitely not at all damaged by a recent divorce, had been searching the internet for a Filipino wife because he believed in their “marriage values.”
Still, despite the obstacles that Brett and Daya initially faced, the two did seem ridiculously happy where we left off. Are Brett and Daya still together? Is his mother still in active boycott mode? We can only hope that Self-Quarantined will provide the answers we all deserve.
Narkyia and Lowo (90 Day Fiance Season 4)
Narkya and Lowo didn’t appear in the first few episodes of their season, and when they did, their scenes were far more infrequent than anyone else’s. Still, what they lacked in screen time, they made up for in content. Narkiya came out of the gates swigging rum from a red solo cup and seemingly never stopped. Some may say her romance with Lowo, who initially told her was a widower living in Alabama, was doomed from the start. Lowo was in fact living in Nigeria, as was the (very-much-alive) mother of his son and his multiple wives. On top of that, Lowo admitted to dating multiple US women online in an attempt to get a green card. But, as he told Narkyia, the scheme broke down when he fell in love with her.
He's basically a modern-day Music Man.
Is Lowo still printing Narkyia’s selfies and plastering them to the wall? Is Narkyia still shoving ice cream cones in his face? So many (insane) questions, so little time.
Rather than focusing on specific couples, if you’re looking soak in full seasons of 90 Day Fiancé and its spin-offs, I’d suggest the following:
- 90 Day Fiancé Season 5 - This season had it all - a Christian rock/family band, water buffalos, and accusations of devil worship. Plus, Self-Quarantined checks in with David and Annie, Elizabeth and Andrei, and Molly, all of whom appeared on that season.
- 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days Season 1 - I could watch hours of Darcey Silva just being Darcey. But I’d start with this, the season where it all began. You’ll also see Jesse, Patrick and Cortney, all of whom are set to make Self-Quarantined appearances.
- 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way - The world will never know a love like the love that Sumit had for Jenny. Just watch it and tell me that I’m wrong. As a bonus, the season also features Corey and Evelin and Tiffany and Ronald. Both couples are slated for Self-Quarantined appearances.
90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined premieres Monday, April 20 at 9pm ET on TLC. Full seasons of 90 Day Fiancé, 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, 90 Day Fiancé: Pillow Talk, 90 Day Fiancé: What Now? and 90 Day Fiancé: Just Landed are available on demand via TLC.
