This year’s VMA performers include both throwbacks from the channel's past, as well as many current nominees, and a salute to this summer’s 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop. Shakira and Sean “Diddy” Combs will be honored with the Video Vanguard Award and Global Icon Award, respectively, and both are expected to perform. Nicki Minaj will pull double duties as both host and performer, and Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are scheduled to perform their new single “Bongos.” Celebrated rap producer Metro Boomin is slated to get his own showcase that will include appearances by Future, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Swae Lee, and NAV, and the hip-hop tribute will feature Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Doug E. In spite of the strongly-held opinion of a certain now-canceled rapper, no one really cares who wins these awards, at least not in 2023. The exception might be the top category, Video of the Year, whose nominees are as follows:

Miley Cyrus - “Flowers”
Nicki Minaj - “Super Freaky Girl”
Olivia Rodrigo - “Vampire”
Sam Smith & Kim Petras - “Unholy”
