These are just a handful of the things you can look forward to in season 3 of AMC’s hit The Walking Dead spin-off, The Walking Dead: Dead City. Focusing on the Big Apple adventures of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Dead City has a tone and style that distinguishes it from the other series in The Walking Dead Universe. While the plot is still structured around rival factions with competing visions for rebuilding the world, the series also focuses on the legacies of its mismatched central duo, asking questions around our capacity for forgiveness and growth and the thin line separating righteous justice from all-consuming revenge.
The show’s third season – which premieres Sunday, July 26 at 9:00 PM ET on AMC and AMC+ – flips the script again, with new showrunner Seth Hoffman plotting a more collaborative future for Negan and Maggie. Here’s what to expect from season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City. As those who watched the unforgettable season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead remember, Negan and Maggie’s history begins with Negan’s murder of her husband Glenn. Understandably, Maggie’s bitterness lingered through the first two seasons of Dead City, when Maggie and Negan reunite and travel to NYC in search of her now-teenaged son Hershel. But when the family reunion finally takes place, it’s far from happy, as a bitter Hershel reveals the alienation he’s felt toward his mother due to her obsession with Negan and grief over Glenn.
In the second season, Maggie and Negan find themselves at odds in a turf war for the future of Manhattan. Both are being manipulated by powerful, shadowy forces, and when they finally face off, Maggie is able to wound Negan. But as she prepares to execute him, they realize that Negan’s surrogate daughter Ginny has died and turned into a walker. This revelation breaks Negan spiritually, and causes Maggie to realize that the power to end the cycle of violence and retribution is in her own hands. By the end of the season, Maggie and Negan have formed an uneasy alliance, while Hershel stays behind to nurture his own familial wounds.

With Maggie and Negan having finally established a genuine alliance and co-leadership rather than a relationship built on manipulation and forced cooperation, the central plot of season 3 focuses on stabilizing the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse. But with progress comes new outside threats, forcing Maggie and Negan to choose between the isolation that kept them safe in the past or an expansion that could fortify their future.
Season 3 will introduce a number of new characters who will appear alongside Maggie, Negan, and Hershel (Logan Kim). They include:
- Renata (Aimee Garcia): The fierce matriarch of a new faction who has a dark history with the Croat. Her group will reportedly align with Maggie and Negan to fight back against the invading forces of the New Babylon Federation.
- Dr. Luis (Raúl Castillo): Renata’s brother and a skilled physician. He serves a vital narrative role by acting as a mentor to Hershel, who decides he wants to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and study medicine.
- Dillard (Jimmi Simpson): An eccentric bartender who has survived for years on his own inside a Manhattan bar. The isolation has taken a psychological toll, leaving Dillard believing he can actually speak to and understand the dead. He strikes up a boozy, comical friendship with Negan, bringing a fresh, lighter tone to the season.
Other things to keep an eye on this season include “evolving walkers” who have real names and recognizable personalities, and an alternate-reality episode that will imagine what Maggie and Negan’s lives would have been like if the zombie apocalypse hadn’t taken place. That episode is rumored to feature a cameo appearance from Maggie’s sister Beth (Emily Kinney), who suffered a tragic death in season 5 of The Walking Dead.
