TV News Dump: ‘Killing Eve’ Teaser, Jude Law and ‘RuPaul All-Stars’ to Showtime, and More
- BBC America has released a trailer for season 3 of its critical darling Killing Eve, starring Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh as an assassin and her pursuer, both of whom are unhealthily obsessed with each other. The series was created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), who also wrote and ran the first season, before passing the reins to Emerald Fennell; Suzanne Heathcote will run the third season, in which Eve appears [spoiler alert] to be alive, if not exactly well. (The A.V. Club)
- Melissa Leo, who won an Oscar for her role in The Fighter and an Emmy for a guest shot on Louie, will star as a gifted but difficult criminologist in Blood Relative, coming to FOX. No premiere date or other cast has been set, but if it’s about Melissa Leo being mean to people, I predict a speedy season 2 renewal. (THR)
- Battlebots, the robot-fighting competition series first seen in the wee hours on Comedy Central back in the ‘90s, has just scored a massive 50-episode renewal on Discovery. Eighty teams will compete to take down reigning champ Bite Force to win The Giant Nut. Sounds great, but I’m still waiting for C-3PO, HAL-9000, ED-209, and the T-1000 to throw down in Battlebots All-Stars. (THR)
- True-crime powerhouse Investigation Discovery (ID) is partnering with The New York Post for “Torn From The Headlines: The New York Post Reports,” which will take viewers delve into some of New York City’s darkest crimes. Each hour-long episode will take viewers into six cases chronicled in the Post via archival news footage, interviews from survivors and family members, and never-before-seen evidence. I just hope they make sure to give every episode a snarky title (Variety)
- Jude Law is set to play The Auteur for Taika Waititi. Showtime has ordered multiple scripts for the half-hour horror comedy series, based on a graphic novel by Rick Spears, James Callahan and Luigi Anderson, about a horror director (Law) whose zeal for a hit leads him to trap his cast and crew on a film set with a serial killer on the loose. Waititi, red-hot off his Oscar win for writing Jojo Rabbit, will direct the first episode and co-write the series with Peter Warren. We’re looking forward to it -- just so long as this does not delay the new season of What We Do In the Shadows. (Deadline)
- The end is in sight for Steven Universe: Cartoon Network has set the final 10-episode season of the critically adored, Peabody-winning family series for 7pm ET March 6, with a four-part series finale set to air March 27. But it may not be the end of the road for the characters. “Though our epilogue series is coming to a close,” series creator Rebecca Sugar said in a statement, “please trust that like us, these characters will always be growing, changing, and supporting each other.” Say it with me, friends: Six seasons and a movie! (Variety)
- Post-merger, the newly reunited ViacomCBS continues to cross-pollinate its brands and assets with the announcement that the next season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars will air on Showtime rather than VH1, with a premiere set for June 5. Does this mean that we’ll finally get some nudity on this show? THR)
