Broadway Hit 'Good Night, And Good Luck' is Coming to CNN

George Clooney’s Tony-nominated smash ‘Good Night, And Good Luck’ will have a special live performance on CNN. Here’s a preview and how to watch with Sling TV.

Broadway theater has been a staple of New York City since the 1700’s, so there aren’t many “firsts” left for it to cross off. But there will be one fewer next week, as, for the first time ever, a broadway show will air live on television.

Following its record-breaking run at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre, George Clooney’s Good Night, And Good Luck will air its penultimate performance Saturday, June 7 at 7pm ET live on CNN. Nominated for five 2025 Tony Awards – including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Clooney – Good Night, And Good Luck has been a sensation since its debut performance on March 12: It recently became the highest-grossing play in Broadway history, as well as the first play to surpass a gross of $4 million in a single week.

In a statement announcing the show’s CNN premiere, Clooney said “I can’t tell you how exciting it is to do something that’s never been done. CNN is the perfect place to bring this story of courage to so many more people than we could have ever hoped. Live TV. No net. Buckle up everyone.”

Here’s how to watch the history-making broadcast live with Sling.

The performance will air commercial-free beginning at 7pm ET, but special coverage will begin at 6:30pm ET with CNN’s Pamela Brown, Brian Stelter, and Harry Enten live from the Winter Garden Theater. When the performance finishes, Anderson Cooper will host a live special Good Night, and Good Luck: Truth and Power, that will “discuss the production as well as the state of global journalism, all in front of a live audience of journalism students,” according to Variety. The panel discussion will include CNN’s Abby Phillip; Jorge Ramos, the longtime Univision anchor; former CBS News anchor Connie Chung; author and biographer Walter Isaacson; New York Times opinion columnist Bret Stephens; and technology journalist and podcaster Kara Swisher. The special will also include an interview with “Marvin Kalb, one of the last journalists recruited by Murrow to work for CBS News.”

What is ‘Good Night, And Good Luck’ About?

Here’s a description courtesy of CNN:

“In this landmark theatrical and live television event, two-time Academy Award® winner and Tony Award® nominated George Clooney makes his Broadway debut as Edward R. Murrow, showcasing his legendary, history-altering, on-air showdown with Senator Joseph McCarthy. As McCarthyism casts a shadow over America, Murrow and his news team choose to confront the growing tide of paranoia and propaganda, even if it means turning the federal government and a worried nation against them.”

Based on Clooney’s 2005 film of the same name, Good Night, And Good Luck was written by Clooney and Grant Heslov, and is directed by Tony Award-winner David Cromer.
