A relatively brisk two and a half years after the season 6 finale, Rusty, Hank, Dean, Brock, JJ, the Monarch, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, Pete White, Billy Quizboy, Wide Wale, Sirena, and the rest are back for a new season of The Venture Bros. this Saturday night at midnight on Adult Swim.
Opening with a flashback to two years later, the season premiere finds Jonas Jr. excavating the crashed remains of Gargantua-1, beside a creepy-looking statue not unlike the little idol from the beginning of The Exorcist, and ordering that its HAL-9000-like computer, P.R.O.B.L.E.M., be preserved and kept in use. Pretty soon VenTech Tower is experiencing electrical disturbances, Dean is complaining that something is writing on his stomach from the inside, and Dr. Venture is waving away his son’s concern that the place is haunted: “Maybe your stomach just wants to to take a break from veganism.”
All of which is to say that The Venture Bros. you remember is back in all its acerbic, pop-culture-referencing, bickering glory, populated as always with ultraspecific characters with oddball personality tics, rich backstories, and weird accents.
Without giving anything away, it also looks ready to address one of the longest-standing mysteries in the show’s byzantine mythology, while also exploring the more recent conflicts provided by Hank’s relationship with Sirena — complicated by the fact that her father is stalwart arch Wide Wale — and the Monarch’s ongoing side-gig as the Blue Morpho. We only got to see the premiere, but it was proof positive that the Venture Bros. fans have been obsessing over since 2003 (!) is back and funny as ever. If you know this show, you don’t need anyone to sell it to you, you just need to know what day and what time — and the answer to that is midnight, August 5.
New episodes of The Venture Bros. air Saturdays at midnight on Adult Swim; recent episodes will be available next day on demand.
